Reuters just posted a headline saying Iraqi officials have said they won't be hanging Saddam within the 30 day time period. Who to believe? Reuters or Reuters? Or CNN who is now reporting he may already be dead.

(besides, wouldn't a good tree or beam do fine?) It's actually a bit more complex than that.
Believe it or not, a skilled hangman was highly prized in the old days, as unskilled ones made the spectacle rather gruesome, with either too little drop, poorly placed knots, etc., which led to strangulation, not good ol' neck snapping--or even worse, too great a drop...which led to the head popping off, much to the consternation of witnesses.
If proper form and proper equipment are not employed, you can bet the NGOs will be all over it, trying to stop the other defendants from being executed and using public opinion for support.
