Saddam could be executed within days-U.S. official
Reuters ^ | December 28, 2006

Posted on 12/28/2006 12:56:00 PM PST by West Coast Conservative

The Iraqi government has told U.S. officials that former Iraqi president Saddam Hussein could be executed within the next few days, a senior Bush administration official said on Thursday.

"I've heard that it's going to be a couple more days, probably," the official said while Bush took a holiday break at his Texas ranch.

He said he had heard from U.S. officials in Baghdad that the execution would not be Thursday U.S. time or Friday Baghdad time. "It's going to be maybe another day or so," the official said.

He said the government of Iraq would most likely inform U.S. officials about the timing of the execution when it gets closer.

The U.S. official's comments were at odds with those of Iraqi officials who earlier backed away from suggestions Saddam would be hanged within a month. The officials said that the hanging would occur within 30 days only if Iraq's president issues a decree it takes place immediately, which seemed unlikely.

In Iraq, lots of people get killed every day with little or no preparation, forethought or consideration.

Anyone else find this ironic?

How about having Saddam stand in line for police/army recruiting and have them kill their own former leader?

What's the hold up?

Per reports, they must execute him before April 2007 when he turns 70. After that, it would be against Iraqi law to execute him.

Per reports, the US has already provided a mobile gallows.

Per reports, they have said they will execute him before the end of the year.

The longer they linger, the more likely the UN and EU and WC and ACLU and IRC and AI and CAIR will all be issuing their obligatory whines.

Get on with it!

If they don't the stomach to carry it out, heck, send him over to Ethiopia. Those Ethiopians seem to know who to deal with matters.

Saddam's Death To Be Videotaped (You-Tube?)

CBS News ^ | 12/28/06
(CBS/AP) Saddam Hussein's final moments will be videotaped by the Iraqi government, reports CBS News correspondent Randall Pinkston. National Security adviser Mouffak al Rubaie says the date of the deposed dictator's execution will not be made public, to avoid possible unrest from Saddam's supporters, but everything from the signing of the final orders by the judge, to the hanging itself will be recorded. Iraqis, members of the coalition, and international representatives will witness the execution. It's not clear whether the videotape will be broadcast on Iraqi television. An Iraqi government official says efforts are under way to carry out the death...

Can you imagine the mess the incoming congress can make of this? The Kucinich types would rant about how he was unfairly or illegally deposed. Then the Kerry types could use a live Saddam as leverage for further funding of the Iraq war (they would be for it before they would be against it). Finally the Clintoon types would wait and see how public opinion polls deal with the issue then claim the majority opinion as their own.

On the other hand, Robert Byrd, in one of his rare moments of cognizance, could offer his hood to the exectioner...

If Saddam possesses an ounce of sanity, and I believe he does, facing the unknown time of his certain death is much more torturous than his actual hanging will be.

For this reason, I hope that he is as unsure of his death date as we are and, like his victims, is suffering in a cold sweat, wondering when the time will be.

Like you, I need to watch his hanging as a form of closure for myself.

What this monster did to thousands of people can never be forgiven or forgotten.

The first step to recovery, is to watch and witness this monster hanging from the end of a rope.

I am probably alone concerning this hanging, but I would not want to watch anyone be hung, Sadaam included. I agree he should be put to death, but I don't find it something to celebrate.I hope and pray that Sadaam has a heart change before the rope goes around his neck. Heaven is open to the vilest sinner, if one seeks repentance. ( Remember the thief on the cross next to Jesus?)
Okay, I have spoken my piece. Flame away!

Yes, in one sense of the word, there is shouting when evil is brought down. I guess what I am saying is that God weeps over a soul that has hardened his heart towards His Salvation. I do not believe that God is laughing and enjoying a party spirit at a hanging of a lost soul.

Well the whinos are at it already. This is from the CBS article: "A top Vatican official condemned the death sentence against Saddam in a newspaper interview published Thursday, acknowledging the crimes of the ousted Iraqi leader but reiterating that capital punishment goes against the teachings of the Roman Catholic Church. Human Rights Watch, an international watchdog group, says Saddam was certainly a human rights violator, but Iraq's government shouldn't execute him. "The true test of respect for human rights comes when the human rights of someone who has violated in unspeakable ways the human rights of many millions of people comes into play," said the group's Richard Dicker. "

Yeah, we're sitting over here wondering exactly how "interesting" it's gonna get, in the days following his execution. For us civilians, things can get a little weird. There are no "front lines" and no "rear" so, you never know when, where, or how something will happen.

I think whatever's gonna happen, will happen here, not back in the States. But, you can't be sure.

Personally, I hope they do it soon. It should put an end to his followers holding on to any hope that he will somehow escape his fate and regain power. Also, I've got a three week R&R coming up, and I don't want this s@#* screwing up my travel plans. 8-)

Regards
