Human life began millions of years ago and has been evolving ever since. It can't be flipped on and off as a light switch. It is illogical to say an embryo formed by a living sperm and a living egg that came from two living individuals is not alive.

Dr. Jerome Lejeune discovered the extra chromosome that causes Down Syndrome and devoted his career to treating the children who suffer from it. He also happens to have been a powerful advocate for the unborn.

The question of "When does life begin?" is actually pretty simple. It began a few thousand or few billion years ago (pick your favorite origin of life story -- either one works just fine) and hasn't stopped. The cells involved in reproduction are never not alive. If they were ever not alive, they'd stay not alive since dead things tend to stay dead.
The real question, "When does a new individual begin?" And once you are asking the right question, the right answer there becomes pretty clear, too.
To: Coleus
The more I think about the more I realize how stupid this question really is.
If a living man and living woman make a baby, at what point is that baby NOT living?

It's an argument I haven't heard before, but....
So I read the Scriptures that say that "life is in the blood." What that says to me is that when a fetus has blood of its own, it is alive. Perhaps life exists prior to that, as well.

though the egg has half of the needed parts, it's still just living cells, where the sperm is truly alive with a purpose and drive and the ability to move and reason on it's own.
when that enters the egg it is becomes whole... and alive with a purpose of growing and maturing to full term.
if that's not life... what is???

Compare this wonderful definition of the beginning of life to the sickening things that are happening around embryo research. Lifesite news reports that the Canadian Institute of Health Research has approved a project for stem cell research which will use 'donated fresh embryos', meaning embryos which have been created in a lab, not been frozen, but rejected for implantation.

The only possible reason for the whole argument to even come up is because if it's not a *person* then killing it is not murder. Therefore, one can do what one wants to that embryo with a *clear* conscience and no fear of moral or ethical consequences. Then it opens the door for abortion, embryonic stem cell research, and all manner of other evils done against a human being in the name of science and progress.

When Does Life Begin?A Catholic priest, an Episcopalian minister, and a rabbi are all asked this question.
The priest says, "Clearly, at the moment of conception, we have a viable human being. So life begins at conception."
The minister says, "No, it's not a human being until it's born. Like begins once we're outside the womb!"
Finally, the rabbi says, "You're both wrong! Life begins when the kids move out and all the pets die!!"
