Minnesota is becoming more conservative (well, maybe less crazy leftwing liberal, then) every year. Circulation of the Red Star and Pioneer Putz are dropping, suburbs are growing and solidly Republican. Coleman's win was on his own account and I don't think was a reaction to the Wellstone funeral. Otherwise stand-in candidate Mundale would've won.

This guy suffers from extreme emotional instability (proven on several TV interview shows) all his opponent has to do is push him into a verbal corner in a televised debate and watch the fireworks. He will self-destruct quickly and even the most strident lib will have to take notice and ponder his ability to represent them.

Safe Democrat seat?

Between 1978 and 1990, Republicans held both MN Senate Seats, and only between 2000 and 2002 did they hold neither. It's hardly a safe D seat.

Despite his politics he was funny at one time. He used to be a writer for SNL when it was funny. He did his own schtick about the "Year of Al Franken" which was very funny, IMHO.

The Stuart Smalley stuff was a hilarious send-up off all the new age self-help nonsense.

Maybe he's still funny now, but I haven't read any of his books or listened to his radio show because it is purely political. But when he was doing non-political stuff it was pretty good.

But the only reason he won was because the funeral for Paul Wellstone turned into a circus.

The Wellstone Funeral/Party might have help put him over the top, but I remember the race being close (if not a statistical dead heat) when Wellstone died. Coleman didn't come out of nowhere 2 weeks before.

My wife's ex-boyfriend was a NYC physical therapist One of his clients was Al Franken, who sufferes from chronic back pain. My wife met him a few times. She said her ex-boyfriend told her that Al Franken had the "stinkiest butt" he ever experienced. They all discussed whether someone should tell Mr. Franken to take a shower before coming to his therapy session.

As a recent refugee from the DFL politics of Minnesota, all I can say is, "Enjoy. You all deserve each other."

(Please note: if you are a Minnesota Freeper, you have my deepest sympathy. Oh, well, there's always Joe Soucheray...")

Sad, but it's possible. Life is resembling a comedy skit. But it's not funny.

Shuddering.
Here's hoping he loses by a landslide, and goes into a whiny temper tantrum about how it was all because of some right- wing conspiracy against him.
