Giuliani Would Defeat Hillary in New Jersey (Quinnipiac alert)
angus-reid.com ^ | 1/31/2007 | Staff

Former New York City mayor Rudy Giuliani is the favourite Republican United States presidential contender for voters in the Garden State, according to a poll by the Quinnipiac University Polling Institute. 48 per cent of respondents in New Jersey would vote for Giuliani in a head-to-head contest against Democratic New York senator Hillary Rodham Clinton.

In other match-ups, Rodham Clinton holds a one-point edge over Arizona senator John McCain, and a 24-point advantage over former Massachusetts governor Mitt Romney. McCain leads former North Carolina senator John Edwards by six points, and Illinois senator Barack Obama by three points.

In 2004, Democratic nominee John Kerry carried New Jersey’s 15 electoral votes, with 53 per cent of the vote. No Republican has won the Garden State since George H. Bush in 1988.

Incumbent George W. Bush is ineligible for a third term in office. The next United States presidential election is scheduled for November 2008.

Polling Data

If the 2008 election for President were being held today, and the candidates were (the Democrat) and (the Republican), for whom would you vote?

Rudy Giuliani (R) 48% - 41% Hillary Rodham Clinton (R)
John McCain (R) 43% - 44% Hillary Rodham Clinton (R)
Mitt Romney (R) 29% - 53% Hillary Rodham Clinton (R)
John McCain (R) 45% - 39% John Edwards (R)
John McCain (R) 42% - 39% Barack Obama (R)

(sic) re: all the erroneous "(R)" designations.

Source: Quinnipiac University Polling Institute Methodology: Telephone interviews to 1,310 registered Ohio voters, conducted from Jan. 16 to Jan. 22, 2006. Margin of error is 2.7 per cent.

He is a leader! I hope that Rudy picks a VP like Gov Keating who used to get in trouble in OK for telling it like it is including going after the teacher's union. Gov Keating will stand up to anyone and is also socially conservative so he would be a good fit. Our teacher's union in OK would go nuts if he were on the ticket. I would love to see it just so they would go over the edge! That would be a pass the popcorn moment!

and I am still not convinced that the social issues would implode under Rudy. until we hear what he has to say about judges, his pro-choice position as mayor of a city with a 9:1 Democratic registration doesn't tell us anything. gay civil union is going to be an issue left to the states - that's the status quo today.

Rudy is perfect for 'turning NJ'. I am quite interested in how Rudy does RED STATE wise. So far he seems to get quality receptions where ever he goes but that is not the same as a primary election, so we wait!

I think you are right but I have the perfect solution that would drive the liberals absolutely nuts especially the teacher's unions. Pick the former Governor of Oklahoma Frank Keating for VP. He is is tough as nails, shares the terrorism on OK with NYC, went after the teacher's union and they hate him, has a tendency to insert foot in mouth which makes people like me love him. Gov Keating doesn't back down.

Gov Keating just came out with the fact that immediately after OKC Bombing he asked the FBI to investigate further all the reports of additional people being involved but nothing ever happened. He has the documentation to back it up. Something caused him to go public with that which might be Ms. Clinton running and getting his hands on the documents -- that is pure speculation on my part.

I watched Duncan Hunter tonight on C-Span...had one of the best naps since Christmas. He's a solid American, but he'll never electrify the electorate, IMHO.

I suggest the code word is "leadership."

A big part of leadership is communication. God bless "W" but he isn't a great communicator.

Rudy is a great communicator. Rudy must awaken the electorate and elicit their involvement in this war. The world must join this war. It cannot unless it is called upon to do so.

Rudy can and will do that!

Rudy is highly thought of in NJ.

THere are a lot of commuters from northern and central NJ that work in NYC. And a lot of former New Yorkers that moved to Jersey because they couldn't afford New York anymore. (or they traded in their apartments for a HOUSE)

I'd be interested in whom he thinks would be a good candidate for SCOTUS. He'd probably pick someone for their law&order positions or similar viewpoints and give less weight to the social agenda. One would think that that would tend toward a moderate to conservative position, but anything is possible. He wouldn't appoint a liberal.

. . . or would he??

It hit me as I was typing my reply to you. The two of them personify leadership and would drive the anti-war movement absolutely nuts! My kind of guys!

Rudy is for and has a firm record of:

BEING STAUNCHLY FOR THE WOT

CUTTING TAXES

CUTTING THE SIZE OF GOVERNMENT

MASSIVELY LOWERING THE WELFARE ROLLS,

STANDING UP AGAINST THE UN, A SAUDI PRINCE, AND ARAFAT

DOING AWAY WITH SET ASIDES FOR MINORITY AND WOMEN OWNED BUSINESSES

CUTTING CRIME

WANTING ONLY STRICT CONSTITUTIONALISTS ON THE SCOTUS

HIS FAVORITE JUSTICES ARE SCALIO, ROBERTS, AND ALITO

There are far more things to think about, than just the ones you listed and that's what we all need to do, vis-a-vis the GOP candidates.

Romney seems like a nice guy, but he seems a bit weak and though I don't, some demonize Mormonism.

McCain is unstable, old, and his cancer keeps reoccurring.

It was in 1983 that Giuliani indicted financiers Marc Rich and Pincus Green on charges of tax evasion and making illegal oil deals with Iran during the hostage crisis, in one of the first cases in which the RICO Act was employed in a non-organized crime case. Rich and Green fled the United States to avoid prosecution; both were controversially pardoned by the executive order of President Bill Clinton in 2001.

No he wouldn't.. The northeast is completely Gramskized.. Oh ! and the west coast too..

Would be a miracle if ANY republican won as president in 2008..
Newt has a slim chance.. very slim.. but with a push he might defeat her..
Nobody else has a chance in hell..

You are right, a lot of NJ is pretty much part of NY demographic wise. If you know the metropolitan area its easy to see why. Whats interesting is how many former New Yorkers live in red state city's and towns all across the country and they like this guy!

And you can poo poo it but the Italian surname thing is going to be significant, people are always proud of 'one of their own', you might not like that some people vote like that instead of issues but thats the way it is in the real world.
