France Tells U.S. to Sign Climate Pacts or Face Tax
NY Times ^ | 2/1/07 | Katrin Bennhold

PARIS, Jan. 31 — President Jacques Chirac has demanded that the United States sign both the Kyoto climate protocol and a future agreement that will take effect when the Kyoto accord runs out in 2012.

He said that he welcomed last week’s State of the Union address in which President Bush described climate change as a “serious challenge” and acknowledged that a growing number of American politicians now favor emissions cuts.

But he warned that if the United States did not sign the agreements, a carbon tax across Europe on imports from nations that have not signed the Kyoto treaty could be imposed to try to force compliance. The European Union is the largest export market for American goods.

“A carbon tax is inevitable,” Mr. Chirac said. “If it is European, and I believe it will be European, then it will all the same have a certain influence because it means that all the countries that do not accept the minimum obligations will be obliged to pay.”

"Well, then we just just slap an extra $5/bottle tax on French wine."

Not going to matter to a person like me who has a self-imposed lifetime ban against purchasing French wine. $5 tax, $10 tax, lowering the price by 90%, none of it will matter. Of course if someone else has bought it, I'll be happy to drink it. :-)

That 1st season kind of led a person in that direction. So give Mom a break.....No thats what Jack would do...I don't mean break...I mean go easy on her. My son got me started before last season. He then sent me the sets of the seasons I missed. I am hooked. I do hope your family is over the trauma your forced watching did to them!

They now understand why I had to do what I did.

It was so much fun watching four or more episodes a night on DVD. This waiting one whole frigen week for just one hour is hell.

Get used to it, American's are fickle, they will eventually do what the left wants of them, between Hollywood, Academia, and the MSM, we are doomed to a citizenry of fools.

And it goes so fast. I am glad Jack got over shooting his friend in the neck. I was starting to worry about him getting all soft and fuzzy. It was good that you took control of your family. Admirable. LOL

They could raise the tax on Dial soap to $1,000 per bar and it wouldn't hurt DialCorp's bottom line one bit.

They should be all caught up in time for the reruns of this season to begin.

They did a great job casting Jack's brother.

Time to trash my Brie, Champagne, quit staying at the Frenchie Hotel chains, no worry about "Total" gas, they're gone (or at least changed their name) in my town.

I'm kind of surprised that no one so far has noted that 'we' just elected a dem/socialist congress. This kind of 'diplomacy' will have a willing audience in DC and that audience is going to work very hard to nab the presidency in 2008.

Don't count surrender out just because 2007 seems a bit early.

France was hurt by our boycott a couple of years ago. I really don't think they want to get into a trade war.

I have seen that guy somewhere before and he didn't play a nice guy either.

Worth reading:

"In France we are still stuck in 1970s Keynesian-style economics - we live in the world of 30 years ago," he said. "In our schools we fabricate a vision of society that is very different from the one that exists in other countries."

That's what the "Path to 9/11" was. Sadly that was based on actual events.
