Profanity and an off-color comment about Cajuns by Nick Saban that he thought would remain private have become public, causing the former Dolphins coach to issue an apology Wednesday through the University of Alabama. During a 40-minute meeting with three South Florida newspaper reporters, including one from the South Florida Sun-Sentinel, on Jan. 4 in Tuscaloosa, Ala., after being named the Crimson Tide's head coach, Saban relayed an anecdote about the reaction to his hiring at Louisiana State University, a Southeastern Conference rival where he coached from 2000 to 2004. Saban told the reporters that "you guys won't be able to print this" before conveying what he said was a telephone call he had received from an unidentified member of LSU's board of trustees. "He was walking down the street yesterday before the Sugar Bowl," Saban said. "He calls me. There was a guy working in the ditch, one of those coon-ass guys that talk funny. I can't talk like them, but he can. Most people in Louisiana can." Continuing his story, Saban then repeated the worker's vulgar comment about him going to Alabama. Saban laughed and then added, "But that's how [LSU fans] are, though. They're passionate, hardcore." Audio of the interview was recently aired on WQAM (560-AM) and subsequently posted on the Internet, which prompted Saban to issue a statement about

The apology is merited because?
BWHAHAHA! That's the Dolphins radio network flagship. The sports fans in South Florida, and QAM especially are out for Saban's head.
coon ass?
Coon ass = redneck
You have to apologise to rednecks now? A lot of people identify themselves as rednecks.
Saban's an idiot for trusting the media.
But what's vulgar about what he said?
Not acquainted with the term coon-butt--is that the vulgarity mentioned?
Coon ass is kind of like the N-word. It's ok for Cajuns to use it on each other (I'm a transplanted Cajun) but offensive if someone else does.
While I didn't grow up in LA, I was born there and lived there until I was 4. I've jokingly referred to myself as a CoonAss.
Should I send myself to rehab???
/dripping sarcasm.
Gee. Some folks are sensitive. I didn't think the term C-A was limited to Cajuns. I think hubby's cousin married someone they called C-A, and they were from Michigan. (OK. So they were all transplanted rednecks, but they were not from Louisiana.)
Roll Tide!
I would not equate use of the word to that of blacks using the "N" word. Coon-ass is not really related to coon.
100% dyed in the wool coonass here. Saban saying coonasses talk funny is merely a statement of fact. Cajun accents are cool most everywhere I have been in this country. I've never taken offence at being called a coonass.
Guess his next trip to Baton Rougue might be worth watching.
I knew a captain whose wife was from Louisiana and he used to call her that. And he eventually made general.
I just don't think anyone would care had it been Fulmer, Meyer, Tuberville or any other SEC coach.
Goodness...next time I'm referred to as a Bammer I'll just have to get my back up and cause a stink! not
They think Saban was talking about blacks, not Cajuns.
Coon ass = redneck
Nope. A coon ass is from South Louisiana; a redneck (aka a stump jumper) is from North Louisiana.
