She earns more, and that's OK

As education and job market patterns shift, more women are becoming breadwinners. Many husbands are fine with that.

Aaron Frazier married his college sweetheart Danielle four years ago knowing that she out-earned him by $10,000 a year. Now, that gap is even bigger.

But even though Aaron's accountant salary today is half the $90,000 his wife makes monitoring clinical drug trials, it still doesn't cause any friction.

"I think both of us are pretty modern," said Danielle, 29, of Antioch, Tenn.

"She does more cooking, and I do more housework," said Aaron, 30, adding that if they had a baby, he would start out being the primary child-care giver.

Couples such as the Fraziers — with the wife bringing home most of the bacon — are becoming increasingly common and accepted among the nation's twenty- and thirtysomethings, the result of shifting education and job market patterns, and new attitudes toward work, family and gender differences.

That could help accelerate the growth in the number of marriages in which women are the sole or primary breadwinners. Census Bureau data show that 25.3% of women in two-income marriages bring home the bigger paycheck, up from 17.8% in 1987.

Younger women, now graduating from college at higher rates than men and aggressively recruited by many employers, are becoming anything but desperate housewives. Some, like Danielle Frazier, out-earn male peers starting with their first jobs.

The salaries of college-educated women have risen much faster than those of male graduates, up 34.4% since 1979 versus 21.7% for men, according to Catalyst, a New York-based research group.

Among twenty- and thirtysomethings, more women than men have college degrees. The gap is widest among 25- to 29-year-olds, according to the Census Bureau, with 25.5% of men holding a bachelor's degree as compared with 32.2% of women.........

They're not very secure, and they're too hung up on "being manly".

Well, that's quite a psycho-analysis. I'd love to know what special research you've done (or mutant power that you have) that allows you to state so unequivocably exactly what thoughts and feelings every man in such a situation has. This will help me to differentiate your opinion from the rage-filled fantasies of the hairy-legged feminists.

"Blah, blah, blah. A feminist fantasy. With rare exceptions, every marriage I've seen where the wife was the primary bread-winner was either bad or ended in divorce."

You must know many insecure men.

I know several where the discepancy was so significant that dad stayed home with the kids and mom worked. Everyone is still happy, married, and the kids are the most well behaved, interesting kids I've ever met.

My husband and I are neck and neck. We make basically the same $$, but his ends up putting more $$ into the bank account because I pay for our health insurance, dental insurance, etc. through my company's benefit plan.

Whats the big deal...My wife has informed me whats hers is hers and whats mine is hers...so you see she already makes more than me...!

Since we're basically the same size, sometimes I wear my husband's t-shirts but he would NEVER wear any of my clothes. so in a way your wife is right. LOL!

I suppose it's not any more stupid than the assumption that the husband HAS to be taller than his wife. Ok, so it's as stupid.

I just don't see what the big deal is.

Because you're relationship is not a power struggle. You get it, congratulations. :~)

I've always out-earned my hubby. It's never been an issue for us. He is still the man of the house, and I'm still his adoring wife.

Postscript: my wife is now a SAHM for our two kids, and I have since promoted to a much better position which gives us the financial ability to do so.

I guess being a hockey goon didn't pay very much. :)

Because you're relationship is not a power struggle.

That's true, it's not even a hostile takeover.
It's a merger of two companies that compliment one another's products.

With both CEOs retiring and letting a different boss take the wheel of the new company.

;^)

That stuff is supposed to be the hardest job in the world!

It's a lot tougher when you have little ones at home. When it's just hubby and wife, it's a breeze.

Mine hasn't

We got married after she graduated and I was still in grad school. She worked in defense while I have been in the computer industry. Over the years my salary has been erratic while hers has been steady and growing. Area under the curve they might be close, but for the last 5 years she has been a solid 20% ahead of me in terms of W-2 income. None of this bothers us. We have the same attitude when it comes to spending money, debt, etc. We have always had a single checking account. Decisions are made jointly. She pays the bills since I travel a fair amount and she is always home. I do most of the long range financial planning.

With the right attitude, it can work and work well. We shared child rearing and household work based on skills, not traditional roles. I am a much better cook and she does laundry. I mowed the lawns (when we had them), she did the gardening (which she loves).

Its been thirty years like this. Our 2 daughters are off on their own. Its been a great partnership.

LOL - it was Canada's refusal to take me back which really affected the old pay scale... :-)

stalker would imply that I care enough to look you up - noticing your posts while I'm on threads and recognizing an insecure little man's post quite another story!

And yet, you are compelled not only to notice, but to comment. And even attempt to injure my "oh so fragile ego" with your dim comments. Thanks for noticing.

How are the cats?

My dad is in the same position. His wife makes around 100K per year and he gets about 20K since he retired 10 years ago. He works part time as a loan officer also. He loves being able to play golf, fish, go to the bars, etc., but his wife I think resents him wasting so much time and not working. I worry about what he would do if they got divorced, but they've been together for 25 years, so I think they're pretty stable.
