Pentagon prepares for possible war with Russia

08.02.2007

/PanARMENIAN.Net/ U.S. Defense Secretary thinks that American armed forces must be ready for a large-scale war, the Associated Press reports. “We need a full set of measures to conduct a war, including both special military units necessary for war against terrorists and infantry troops to be able to fight against large regular armies. We do not know what changes can take place in such countries as Russia, China, North Korea, Iran and others,” Robert Gates stated.

He made this statement February 7 during hearings in the U.S. House Committee on Armed Services, when congressmen were discussing United States’ military budget of FY2008. Gates supported the military budget, which supposes to increase the number of U.S. infantry and marines. These measures must increase the number of ‘free detachments’ under the control of Pentagon, in order to be able to respond to possible new threats.

It is worth mentioning that after the end of “cold war” Russia and China were not labeled by the higher command representatives of U.S. army as potential enemies alongside with North Korea and Iran, which are included in the list of the so called “axis of evil”, Lenta.ru reports.

I'd be shocked if they didn't. All military organizations routinely plan for battle against all possible enemies. I'm sure if you did some digging, you're guarenteed to find a war plan somehwere in a Pentagon filing cabinet for the invasion of Denmark, or for fighting a counter-insurgency in Japan.

Hardly news here.

This smacks of Ezekiel prophecy. All the chess pieces in place. Pawns are in motion.

Preparing is a good thing....I'm pretty sure Russia and China have been "prepared" and continue to "prepare" for an invasion of the United States....To think otherwise denotes mental retardation...

"We do not know what changes can take place in such countries as Russia, China, North Korea, Iran and others,” Robert Gates stated.

The article could just as easily been titled "Pentagon prepares for Possible War With Russia, China, North Korea, Iran and Others".

Oh-oh. If Anna
seduces me to obtain
my FR password,

I'll try to hang tough,
but I'll be honest, comrades,
she will break me down . . .

War with Russia would include total thermonuclear annihilation on both sides. Both sides would also obliterate China.

I wonder if the Pentagon still looks at the "Red Dawn Scenario" anymore, given Venezuela's spreading communism and Russia/USSR2 and China supporting them.

Comrade! Have you lost your zeal as a revolutionary?

For the sake of the revolution, I will volunteer to take on this most difficult task.

It looks very dangerous ...

Russia's GNP
is so small they probably
couldn't afford fuel

to fly enough planes
for a proper invasion.
And I bet China

would be unwilling
to sacrifice cargo space
in container ships

for the Reds to use
snail-mail to send soldiers here . . .
No, I think we're safe.

Any strategic analyst would agree with you. What's left of the Russian Federation is without any meaningful re-supply or logistics chain, Euros or dollars to buy fuel, refineries, protected pipelines, an electrical grid to support a wartime industrial base and---it's surrounded by former members of the coerced USSR who cordially hate their former political masters in Moscow and would not willingly allow Russian transit to Western Europe ---as in the Fulda Gap - -with which I am acquainted with every square mile.

Their air defense was obsolete in the 1980s and is virtually non-existant now, airbases untenable with poorly maintained revetments, taxiways, approach systems,no climate controlled hangars for delicate maintenance, no spare parts for the few show-off aircraft and no well trained pilot corps beyond the cadre' now in uniform, no workable reserve structure or recall system, poor training facilities--and a myriad other planner's nightmares.

The Russsian are not coming, the Russians are not coming --Go tell Alan Arkin.

And that doesn't even begin to address the Russians' lack of sea power or the ability to project power to cause a chosen enemy to do its will--which, after all, is the object of international conflict.

We have all seen this coming for along time at FR.

China/Russia/And Iran have a
defacto anti-US/Anti-western/anti-democracy alliance. They want to be the sphere of influence and not the democratic west. We all need to stay vigilant and keep a keen razors edge to possible aggresive moves by these nations.
