Video: “The Half-Hour News Hour” (FNC "Comedy" Show Stumbles Before It Starts)
Hot Air ^ | February 13, 2007 | Allahpundit

Posted on 02/14/2007 4:13:19 AM PST by PJ-Comix

This is the other “info-tainment” show Fox is developing, “Red Eye” being the first. It’s supposed to be a right-wing alternative to the Daily Show, although I don’t recall the last time Jon Stewart did two and a half minutes of Marion Barry jokes and body odor puns.

Maybe the producers leaked this to lower expectations, thereby ensuring our surprise at the quality of the pilot will be that much more pleasant. Maybe?

Bring in Gutfeld’s mom to anchor, boys. It’s your best chance.

VIDEO.

I completely agree with Allahpundit on this show. It is TERRIBLE based on the clip seen here. They need to get rid of their current flock of writers pronto. I know humor/comedy writing well (I used to write for comedians and newspaper humor columns) and I can spot the basic flaw with this show. They are TRYING to spread a message rather than concentrating on comedy. What the writers should do is concentrate strictly on the comedy and the conservative perspective can come out on its own. Of course, that won't work if the writers aren't actually conservative. This clip makes it seem as if they writers aren't conservative but are trying to write what they think will make conservatives laugh. The result is completely unsubtle and unFUnnie.

I know this is going to sound completely arrogant and unhumble but I have to say this. If FNC wants a well written comedy show they need to hire YOURS TRULY pronto. I have a track record including hundreds of newspaper humor columns on file. Krokodil, the Russian humor magazine, had me as their American correspondent.

In any case, based on this clip, the FNC "comedy" show is DREADFUL. Sorry, FNC, you have a good idea but this show is just plain DREADFUL.

I saw the clip and it was flat, not bitingly funny like The Daily Show.

I knew something was wrong but I have no expertise in this. Your analysis is spot-on and I hope they take your advice.

That's what FOX gets for hiring Stephan Colbert as a writer...

I always felt that conservatives could put together a better show than the libs if given the chance. This news is troubling.

Here's the deal. When you TRY to send a message via comedy, you usually fail because you unconciously emphasize the message at the expense of comedy. Now, I don't know the backgrounds of these FNC writers but to me they seem to be writing for what they THINK conservatives will like without necessarily being conservatives themselves. The fact is, the writers of this or any comedy show should eliminate the "message" from their minds and concentrate STRICTLY on the comedy. If they are truly conservative, the "message" will come out in the material. Of course, this can't work if the writers aren't authentic as mentioned above.

My guess here is that the writers were hired and then told to emphasize a conservative message. If the writers aren't really conservative then they will TRY to write (pander) to what they think conservatives will laugh at. The result is this dreck.

The advantage of someone like me (shameless self promo here) is that I come at it from a "conservative" (although I don't like to label myself since a lot of my lifestyle wouldn't be considered conservative) perspective so it enables me to just concentrate on the humor. BTW, the few times I actually did try to send a "message" via humor, it failed miserably. Better to just concentrate STRICTLY on the comedy/humor.

This is why Charles Henrickson writes such great song parodies. He concentrates STRICTLY on the humor and the message just comes naturally from his authentic POV.

I didn't happen to catch it.

Was it "The Chevy Chase Show" bad?

Conservatives seem to be able to raise A LOT of money for elections, etc. Why not get together and raise the money to start up a network devoted to the conservative side of things? Many FReepers could be comedy writers and do much more than what this show was attempting to do. And conservatives could then boycott the other networks as they don't want to report the other side of things to begin with. Just seems that it is time for conservatives to fight back againt the entertainment industry and DNC propaganda known as the media. FoxNews, though it actually gives the other side of things, is not a conservative network.

That whole "BO" joke was already old weeks ago. The FNC writers must have been monitoring the FR for material.

The writers of this FNC "comedy" show seem to have a low opinion of conservatives. Their attitude seems to be, "Lets toss some unsubtle yuks that pander to their POV and they are so stupid that they are sure to laugh."

PJ, put together a video presentation of your stuff and send it to Ailes.

I haven't seen this show, but it sounds like an embarrassment.

I've watched Red Eye; it's horrible, the talent isn't talented, the dialogs are boring, the jokes aren't funny. I didn't realize it was classified as comedy; there aren't many clues in the performance that would lead one to believe that.

FOX needs to dump it and cut losses.

I'll tell you what would be FUnnie. A leftwing couple are in their home watching all the coverage of the Anna Nicole Smith death. You know they are liberal because their walls are covered with all sorts of BDS (Bush Derangement Syndrome) posters. They watch the news reports for about a minute. Then one turns to the other and says, "Bush's fault!"

PJ, put together a video presentation of your stuff and send it to Ailes.

How about if I send him several dozen clippings of my published newspaper humor columns? BTW, these weren't columns in throwaway freebie newspapers. My stuff has gotten published in the Miami Herald, Houston Chronicle, Cleveland Plain Dealer, Vancouver Sun, St. Pete Times, and a lot of other periodicals including Krokodil in Russia which had MILLIONS of readers. The only problem is that all that means nothing to the few TV types I've shown the published material to.

I think the whole Daily Show concept is overused and unoriginal. Better to base a current events type comedy show on the SCTV concept. My idea (call it "Media Circus") is to base a TV show on a failing cable news station. The characters would be talkative blowhards, failing yuppies, RINOs so desperate to keep their shows that they are willing to pander to the liberal POV (does this station sound familiar?). There is a WEALTH of great material in such a concept and it can keep current to whatever is going on in both the news and the media world. I've had this idea for several years now and it is very detailed. I've only presented a very brief description of my concept here.
