Giuliani Tops Clinton In 2008 Pres. Race, Republican Runs Strong In Red, Blue And Purple States
Quinnipiac Poll ^ | 2/21/07

Posted on 02/21/2007 8:51:17 AM PST by areafiftyone

Former New York City Mayor Rudolph Giuliani leads Sen. Hillary Clinton 48 - 43 percent among American voters in a 2008 national presidential poll released by Quinnipiac University today. Arizona Sen. John McCain edges Sen. Clinton 46 - 44 percent.

Giuliani tops Clinton 55 - 38 percent in Red states, which voted Republican in the 2004 presidential election, and ties her 46 - 46 percent in Blue states, which went Democratic in 2004. He gets 44 percent to Clinton's 45 percent in Purple states, where the margin in 2004 was less than 7 percent, the independent Quinnipiac (KWIN-uh-pe-ack) University poll finds. In other possible presidential matchups:

  • Clinton tops former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney 49 - 37 percent;
  • Giuliani beats Illinois Sen. Barack Obama 47 - 40 percent;
  • Giuliani tops 2004 vice presidential candidate John Edwards 48 - 40 percent;
  • McCain ties Obama 43 - 43 percent;
  • McCain gets 43 percent to Edward's 42 percent, a tie;

  • Obama tops Romney 49 - 29 percent;
  • Edwards beats Romney 48 - 32 percent.
"After 9/11, Rudolph Giuliani earned the title 'America's Mayor.' After the 2008 election, he could be America's President," said Maurice Carroll, Director of the Quinnipiac University Polling Institute. "But we vote in November 2008, not February 2007 - and lots of things can happen. Let's watch the state-by-state breakdown and the Electoral College. Remember 2000?"

"When we look at the Red, Blue and Purple state matchups, we see Giuliani running strong in any color, while Sen. Clinton outpoints Sen. McCain in Blue and Purple states. Sen. Obama and John Edwards are in the middle somewhere and Mitt Romney is nowhere, actually losing to Obama and Edwards in Red states, where voters probably just don't know the former Massachusetts governor."

Clinton gets 38 percent of Democratic primary voters, followed by Obama with 23 percent, former Vice President Al Gore with 11 percent and Edwards with 6 percent.

Giuliani gets 40 percent of Republicans, followed by McCain with 18 percent, former House Speaker Newt Gingrich at 10 percent and Romney at 7 percent.

American voters give Giuliani a 57 - 21 percent favorability rating. Favorability ratings for other contenders are:
  • 46 - 45 percent for Clinton;

  • 51 - 22 percent for McCain;
  • 44 - 14 percent for Obama, with 40 percent who haven't heard enough to form an opinion;
  • 44 - 27 percent for Edwards;
  • 44 - 47 percent for Gore;
  • 22 - 47 percent for Gingrich;
  • For Romney, 67 percent haven't heard enough to form an opinion.

President Bush's Approval

American voters disapprove 60 - 34 percent of the job President George W. Bush is doing. Voters disapprove 64 - 30 percent of President Bush's handling of the war in Iraq and oppose 62 - 33 percent the President's plan to send 22,000 more troops to Iraq.

From February 13 - 19 Quinnipiac University surveyed 1,536 American voters with a margin of error of +/- 2.5 percent, including 578 Republicans with a margin of error of +/- 4.1 percent, and 684 Democrats with a margin of error of +/- 3.8 percent.

The Quinnipiac University Poll, directed by Douglas Schwartz, Ph.D., conducts public opinion surveys in New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, Pennsylvania, Florida, Ohio and nationwide as a public service and for research. I don't think so. It's been nearly ten years since Newt left Congress, and I think he learned some lessons from his mistakes that he will not repeat.

It's a long, long way to Tipperary. However among the certified RINOs Rudy is possibly the only one who could get this pro-life, social conservative to vote in 2008.

He needs to keep talking like he's been doing, then pick a socially conservative Veep (I like Steele). He also needs to get a handle on an acceptable immigration policy. One that keeps our border patrol agents out of the slammer and keeps illegals on their side of the Rio Grande.

For all the bellyaching about Rudy not being conservative enough, I am hard pressed to see how he could do worse than President Bush..., though I'm sure I'll be told.

Been there many times and it's not a model for the rest of America, by any means. Yes, even when Rudy was mayor.

Those of us in flyover country don't appreciate the abrogation of our Second Amendment rights nor the influx of illegals. Rudy is content with both (and worse).

No thanks. He may have been YOUR mayor, but he was never "America's Mayor".

In my current city of Indianapols we have;
1. CCW (throughout the state actually) and other Second Amendment rights that New Yorkers would and have gladly ditched.
2. We are not a safe haven for criminal illegal aliens.
3. Our streets are not shut down every other day for the latest queer/illegal/younameit march.

In "flyover country", "progress" is not made with heavy-handed, autocratic rule. No thanks.

Our Democrats put your Republicans to shame, and that's a FACT.

Yes, because telling the truth about the non-conservative positions of Rudy is much more offensive than counting every little thing as a major accomplishment.

No, it is the tone of the anti-Rudy diatribes that offend.

"He may have been YOUR mayor, but he was never "America's Mayor"."

I was wondering when the election was held for the position of "america's mayor". I can't remember voting in it.

The last election rudy won was for leader of one of the most liberal cities in the nation. And he received somewhere around 600,000 votes. Doesn't look like all of america voted for him.

I take it back and apologize for insulting NYC.
While I disagree with many/most public policies of that city, I've been treated well during all my visits.

My real problem is the voters of NYC that constantly put the likes of Schumer, Clinton, Bloomberg and yes, even Rudy, in office and position them to inflict these measures on the rest of us.

But, I will stand by my assertion that New York values are not America's values. We can do better than Rudy and, hopefully, we will.

In her case, you are probably correct. I think he'd win Jersey pretty quickly against either of the corrupt incumbents...

I will agree that Indianapolis is having a problem due to our position in the crack pipeline between Detroit and Chicago. But at least we have the ability to defend ourselves without fear of prosecution.

As I said in a later post, I aplogize for insulting NYC. But I will gladly live with both higher crime AND my constitutional rights.

We must be realistic here: Newt has foot-in-mouth disease.

Yup. When it comes to TV politics... you have to be concise, direct and on-target.

Rudy is our next President.

It will be Rudy over Gore, and the one-issue freepers will be crying all the way to the winners box.

The Hillary crash and burn will have republicans smiling for decades. She's the worst public speaker ever, the least likeable, the worst liar, and frankly dumber than rocks when it comes to thinking on her feet and political smarts. Every disastrous decision in Slick's presidency, and there were dozens, lies at her feet.

Edwards and Obama are silky smooth, and they will eat her alive and make her look like the fool she is in debates. Gore's been campaigning for years and owns the lunatic vote, which is now the largest base of the dems. He'll play the comeback kid role, "I'll only run if you really want me", etc. He can get the big money with little difficulty. It will be fun to revisit his buffoonery, and watch his giant ego go down in flames again.

People are more familiar with Giuliani's leadership than almost any other politician around. His positives are higher than any and his negatives lower than any. Those could change + or - 5% without there being any significant difference. He has been a headline maker for twenty years now.

Giuliani's views are FAR closer to the average American than are yours on every issue you believe will hurt him.

There is nothing to Swift Boat Rudy over. Kerry was not swiftboated for his political views but for his grandstanding and lying about his fellow soldiers.

Swift Boating is not a political attack but an attack upon hypocrisy with the Truth.

There is nothing like that Rudy need worry about.
