Is that a Neanderthal dwelling at Carihuela ?

Just kidding.

But the article gives that impression.

Thanks for the information. I had no idea that the Cro-Magnons had been phased out of existence. But weren't there "anatomically modern" cavemen -- the GEICOmen don't look Neanderthalish to me. Of course, I've never seen Tina.

It's the obvious answer... but most are scared to even think it.

A skeleton of what many believe to be a mix of Neanderthal/Modern Human was found and here is what a reconstruction of that face is believed to have looked like when it was alive.

Something old to chew on...
The Neandertal Enigma
by James Shreeve
Frayer's own reading of the record reveals a number of overlooked traits that clearly and specifically link the Neandertals to the Cro-Magnons. One such trait is the shape of the opening of the nerve canal in the lower jaw, a spot where dentists often give a pain-blocking injection. In many Neandertal, the upper portion of the opening is covered by a broad bony ridge, a curious feature also carried by a significant number of Cro-Magnons. But none of the alleged 'ancestors of us all' fossils from Africa have it, and it is extremely rare in modern people outside Europe." [pp 126-127]

Thanks Blam. I agree, no sense at all. There was an article in the past couple of years where the same claim was made, I'll see if I can find it. Martin, I think that *constitutes* that very reference. Just please don't give anyone a pretext for posting a pic of you-know-who...

My favorite GEICO ad(my favorite ad from any source) is the soap opera one. I saw that one when I was working in an office alongside the boss's wife who was ađicted to soaps. The ad came on immediately following a serial and looked for all the world like another event in the soap as the young man was explaining to the young lady all the reasons why their relationship was over until he said "but I have some good news..." and I 'bout fell out of my chair laughing. I do not watch television at all outside of such situations so I was not ready for that one but I recognized the "good news" line from hearing GEICO ads on AM.

What? No Daryl Hannah 'Clan of the cave bear' reference? It's obvious she hunted these last Neandertals down and took them out.

Spoil sport. I think I already broke this rule in post 52.

Am I the only one who finds it just strangely delightful that the name of a archeologist, who deals in old bones and carcasses, is named Professor Carrion?

Interesting article, although the gratuitous political correctness thrown in at the end seems a bit silly.

"Why were the Homo sapiens Africans, who weren't adapted to the cold, able to move into the area 40,000 years ago, but resident Homo neanderthalensis, who were adapted, couldn't survive that same cold?"
