How lying marketers sold Roe v. Wade to America

Women must have control over their own bodies."

"Safe and legal abortion is every woman's right."

"Who decides? You decide!"

"Abortion is a personal decision between a woman and her doctor."

"Who will make this most personal decision of a woman's life? Will women decide, or will the politicians and bureaucrats in Washington?"

"Freedom of choice – a basic American right."

In one of the most successful marketing campaigns in modern political history, the "abortion rights movement" – with all of its emotionally compelling catch-phrases and powerful political slogans – has succeeded in turning what once was a heinous crime into a fiercely defended constitutional right.

The original abortion-rights slogans from the early '70s – they remain virtual articles of faith and rallying cries of the "pro-choice" movement to this day – were "Freedom of choice" and "Women must have control over their own bodies."

"I remember laughing when we made those slogans up," recalls Bernard Nathanson, M.D., co-founder of pro-abortion vanguard group NARAL, reminiscing about the early days of the abortion-rights movement in the late '60s and early '70s. "We were looking for some sexy, catchy slogans to capture public opinion. They were very cynical slogans then, just as all of these slogans today are very, very cynical."

"Repeating the big lie often enough convinces the public."

And, the dumbed down public never seems to catch on!

Well, at least we found one occasionally honest liberal! Most leftists I know can't bring themselves to tell the truth even when it's in their best interest. It's just not in them.

"Women must have control over their own bodies."

But of course they do. They CAN control their own body to determine whether or not they get pregnant.

Oh, then its not really their own body they must have an unlimited "right" over (according to the abortionists), but the LIFE of their own infant as well. Which is what the slogan really means.

In the eras before the women's movement, the complaint (quite natural) against "men" was that men were able to have sex without taking responsibility for it; when they (the men) tried could get away with it.

It, the irresponsible (take no responsibility) behavior of men (some men), was seen as an assault on the virtue of women, and an assault on virtue itself. Which it was.

But, the true impact of the "women's movement", with respect to the "woman's right to control her own body" has not been "virtuous". It has sought to make it easier (abortion) for women to have sexual lives as irresponsibly as an irresponsible male. Because, the result of that irresponsibility - the unwanted child - could simply be dismissed, as a piece of foreign tissue invading the woman's body.

I cannot think of the originators of this effort (unlimited abortion) as having had a very good childhood themselves.

This piece by David Kupelian is excellent. It's long, but worth reading every word. He lays NARAL and Planned Barrenhood's deceptions bare.

It's so good that we used it, in somewhat abbreviated form, in a publication we put out in SD last fall in defense of the abortion ban.

Ping to my post #7.

David Kupelian's expose of the NARAL ghouls is one of the best ever.

This is what these RINOs running for President have consistently supported.

Thanks for the ping. I'll be adding Duncan Hunter to the keywords, since he is the best pro-life candidate for President.

I believe what turned most people towards acceptance of abortion was TV programs. So many sit-coms and dramatic TV series featured stories with some of their main characters 'agonizing' over whether or not to get an abortion, but then, going on and doing it, and suffering no physical or mental consequences as a result of the decision. I believe "Maude" was the first show, back in the mid 70's, but there were abortion storylines in many shows back then. It was usually presented as the independent attractive woman accidently getting pregnant, and "Oh no, I don't want this to ruin my ENTIRE life, and by the way, I could get an abortion and, voila, problem solved". Or the woman has an abusive husband, and the audience is manipulated into believing that the woman needs the abortion for her own safety. Or the woman is raped, and she shouldn't be forced to carry that man's baby. The stories went on and on, and manipulated public opinion in such a way that something that late in 1972 was considered a most heinous act, became, by 1979, something that was just normal.

It was truly amazing to watch. There were very few storylines that even OFFERED a pro-life opinion, and when they did, it was usually some uptight, holier-than-thou Christian who was doing it, so it was shown to be a negative. It was not only TV series. Almost all of the daytime talk shows had hosts who were pro-abortion, so their programming and choice of guests reflected their attitudes, thereby creating those attitudes among many of their viewers.

It is ironic, then, that the medium that shaped those attitudes worked against the pro-abortion forces, as well. I believe it was Operation Rescue, and the publicity they got from their activities that began to make people start THINKING about the subject, not just FEELING about it. Up to that point, people had begun thinking that the only folks who opposed abortion were men who just wanted to keep their women barefoot, pregnant, and subjugated. All of a sudden, here are folks being carried off by the police who looked nothing like what the pro-abortion media had been saying. Here were young women, old women, young men and old men, who were AGAINST abortion, and were willing to stand up loudly and say so. I think people began to consider that maybe what they'd been being told for the previous 15 years wasn't quite the truth, and maybe they should give it another look. That's when public opinion polls began to change, and they've shown consistently since then, that most people in this country don't think abortion should be legal for all nine months, that there SHOULD be some restrictions, and that teenage girls should NOT be able to get an abortion without the knowledge, if not the consent of their parents.

The pro life movement needs to learn from this...they need to learn from the anti-tobacco crowd as well. Why is it that it is more socailly acceptable to kill a baby than it is to smoke? Because the pro abortion and anti smoking people waged the battle in the court of public opinion. They made depriving others of thier rights a positive affirmation of themselves. Think what can be accomplished by acting in a positive vein...protecting the innocent and defenseless!!

Roe vs Wade was a terrible decision, but abortiuons went on before it and will go on even if it struck down. The pro-life movement MUST do a better PR job.

Focus on the rights of the infant...the sanctity of life...the importance of one generation caring for the next.

Make people see what a Godforsaken, ugly and selfish act an abortion is. The courts and the politiicans won't matter then.

The 70's and early 80's sitcoms were very smug. Abortion and gun control were always painted in somber, serious, apocalyptic scenarios, with the most popular characters on the liberal side.

I still remember George Jefferson getting a gun, and his grandddaughter nearly shoots herself with it. Always a liberal premise or idea put into theatrical form. It was subtle brainwashing, and we still live with the results.

The 'free love' movement of the late 60's brought about consequences (babies) with which the folks involved didn't want to be bothered. I think this is when the pro-abortion push began. They wanted to have all the sex they wanted, they just didn't want to face any of the consequences. If you question someone who is rabidly pro-abortion today, eventually you'll get to that same premise; sex without consequences.

Liberals started working behind the scenes in the late 60's to get the ball rolling, and worked with members of the Supreme Court to lay the groundwork. Some of the Supremes, including Judge Blackmun told liberal lawyers to find a case that could be brought before them, and they'd change the laws. That's exactly what happened. When Sarah Weddington brought the case for Norman McCorvey in Texas, it was pushed all the way to the Supremes with the express intention of striking down ALL laws outlawing abortion.

Smug is a very good description of those shows, and you're right, you can still see that in TV shows of today. Their latest 'triumph' is homosexual 'rights'. What's amazing, though, is that the shows that are considered homosexual 'friendly' almost always have characters who are caricatures of homosexuals, especially the prissy men, which is not the most attractive portrayal, but is the most humorous.

"Abortion is a personal decision between a woman and her doctor."

Then why are taxpayers forced to pay for a so-called "personal decision?" What's the next thing? *Free* nose jobs for anyone who chooses to have one?
