Jesus’ burial site found - film claims

The cave in which Jesus Christ was buried has been found in Jerusalem, claim the makers of a new documentary film.

If it proves true, the discovery, which will be revealed at a press conference in New York Monday, could shake up the Christian world as one of the most significant archeological finds in history.

The coffins which, according to the filmmakers held the remains of Jesus of Nazareth, his mother Mary and Mary Magdalene will be displayed for the first time on Monday in New York.

Jointly produced by Emmy award-winning documentary filmmaker Simcha Jacobovici and Oscar winning director James Cameron, the film tells the exciting and tortuous story of the archaeological discovery.

The story starts in 1980 in Jerusalem’s Talpiyot neighborhood, with the discovery of a 2,000 year old cave containing ten coffins. Six of the ten coffins were carved with inscriptions reading the names: Jesua son of Joseph, Mary, Mary, Matthew, Jofa (Joseph, identified as Jesus’ brother), Judah son of Jesua (Jesus’ son - the filmmakers claim).

Decades of research

The findings in the cave, including the decipherment of the inscriptions, were first revealed about ten years ago by internationally renowned Israeli archeologist Professor Amos Kloner.

Since their discovery, the caskets were kept in the Israeli Antiquities Authority archive in Beit Shemesh, but now two have been sent to New York for their first public exhibition.

Although the cave was discovered nearly 30 years ago and the casket inscriptions decoded ten years ago, the filmmakers are the first to establish that the cave was in fact the burial site of Jesus and his family.

The film, which documents the stages of the discovery, is the result of three years labor and research. It will be broadcast on the international Discovery Channel, Britain's Channel 4, Canada’s Vision and Israel’s Channel 8, which also took part in the film's production.

According to the filmmakers, the film’s claim is based on close work with world-famous scientists, archeologists, statisticians, DNA specialists and antiquities experts.

I believe they're about as genuine as the medieval relics trader who had two original skulls of St. John the Baptist...one from his adulthood, and one depicting him as a younger man.

It's been pretty well established that the Shroud of Turin is a medieval fraud.

Look up the "Sudarium of Oviedo". This is the facecloth that went with the Shroud. It has been in Spain since 600 AD (700 years before the Shroud came to France). The bloody marks on the facecloth, and their DNA match those on the Shroud perfectly.

You may be thinking of the carbon-dating, which indicated a Mediaeval provenance. However the dating was done on a piece of the Shroud used as a "gripping point" during public viewing. For centuries the Shroud was displayed to the public, and held lengthwise by a dozen prelates at least once a year - and their hands weren't all that clean. Its easy to see how this could throw out the C14 dating. (Also, of course the entire Shroud was suffused in woodsmoke during a fire in 1532, further corrupting C14 data).

Maybe you're more up on the Shroud circuit than myself, but there's been plenty of new discoveries that throw the carbon-dating of the late 80s/early 90s completely into question. Namely, the samples they carbon dated were most likey portions of the shroud that had been repaired and rewoven in the 13th or 14th century after it was severely damaged. That being said, there still remain a good number of issues that ought be resolved by the the "medieval fraud" camp (the presence of pollen particles produced only by middle eastern plants, how backwards medievalers produced a photographic negative, etc). Don't get me wrong, my faith would remain unchanged were the Shroud CONVINCINGLY debunked, but it hasn't been.

I'm interested in the Shroud, but agnostic regarding it. Could you back up your claim that a "modern investigator has demonstrated how it was done". I've seen several documentaries on it, some of them quite recent, and have yet to see a replication of the Shroud that duplicated all of its properties. The attempts to duplicate I've seen are generally done by professional "skeptics" who style themselves "researchers" and "debunkers".

Not sure who has emotionally invested in anything - its' not about emotions, it about The Truth. Emotions change, but The Truth always was, always will be, the same.

The only proof needed is God's Word and He already gave us that. Unbelievers demand proof, Christians already have it with a personal relationship with their Savior.

Don't think I'm seriously defending the theory, but the fact the daughter's body was not there doesn't run counter to the Da Vince theory. And the boy may not be mentioned because it died in infancy - lots of that going around at that time.

Yes... he is risen, and at the right hand of the father now as we speak.
I find it amazing all these so called claims by " professionals, experts " about science, and archeology, origins of man, and so on and so on.
All these so called shows in these History Channels are aimed at confusing people and to cause them to doubt their faith, and doubt the authenticity of the Bible.
For example, a few years ago there was a show on one of them channels ( either the History Channel, or the Discovery Channel ) about the Red Sea, Moses, and Israel coming out of Egypt.
One of these shows showed and believed that all of those plagues ( the plagues , they showed was nothing but natural phenomenon that can be explained away ), and the miracle of the opening of the Red Sea, that they crossed not the Red Sea ( they interpreted that it that is was a REED SEA , the delta north east in Egypt ) is were Israel crossed and it didn't take a miracle to cross that part of Egypt.
They believe that is was some kind of low tide mixed with a tsunami, is how Israel crossed, and they believed that Israel went the shortest route out of Egypt.
They are WRONG.
For example, that the traditional Sinai Peninsula belief of were mount Sinai is.
Paul said in the book of Galatians were mount Sinai is, it is in Arabia... not were Monastery of Saint Catherine in the Sinai of Egypt.

The Bible is true, these so called " Professionals, Experts " are trying to confuse people, and cause them to doubt their faith.
I believe that more and more evidence will come to light ( God will allow things to be revealed ) on more physical evidence that the Bible is true, not this so called grave sight that is supposed to be Jesus and his family.
Besides ? Jesus was not buried in a casket, he was buried in grave cloths in a tomb.
