DEAR ABBY: Our 17-year-old twin son and daughter met with military recruiters who came to their school and made the military sound exciting and glamorous. They are now saying that after they graduate next year, they want to join the military instead of going to college. They have even put up military posters in their rooms that they received from the recruiters.
My husband and I are horrified. We cannot stand the thought of them going off to war, and do not believe that war is the answer to the world's problems. It will be a year, and hopefully the novelty of the idea will wear off by then. However, I don't want to take a chance. How can I counter the idea? -- CLEVELAND MOM
DEAR CLEVELAND MOM: Before your children commit themselves to the idea that the military is all foreign travel, shiny medals and glory, they should see firsthand that there is a more serious side. Contact your nearest veterans hospital and inquire about you and your children paying some visits and volunteering to help wounded vets. It may be a sobering experience, but it should open their eyes in no time flat.
Liberals only like to wave death in people's faces when the dead are those defending them. When the dead are people they should be defending.... well, you know the drill...
This may not be the SAME "Dear Abby" that you read years ago. Several of those old biddies (who were related) wrote the columns America became familiar with but were replaced with other writers as they got old/died.
Great analogy, especially since she made that last statement-
"It may be a sobering experience, but it should open their eyes in no time flat."
Yeah, that would bunch her bloomers in a wad!
True.
I also think it would be great if they did do volunteer work at a VA hospital, just so the experience would enrich their lives and make them into better rounded, mature individuals.
Yep. And 'ABBYs' suggestion, although really designed to 'help' this mother, actually will probably benefit the kids more.
Sometimes these liberals make statements that work 'against' their intentions, without even realizing it.
My sister, whom I love dearly and who is a Christian conservative, former Navy, also is horrified at the thought of her son joining the military. She even tried to talk him out of registering for selective service.
In her defense, she IS very hormonal and is sometimes "out there".....
You still have register at 18? Even with an all-voluntary military?
Abby is very pro-homosexual and continually is stating in her columns her belief that "homosexuality is not a choice". I wonder if she would give the parents of a child who has told them that he hasn't made up his mind whether he was homo or hetero to have him visit an AIDS hospice to visit the dying homosexuals before deciding.
It's entirely possible that Dear Abbey "invented"
CLEVELAND MOM to make a political statement.
Possibly, but I doubt it. To me that smacks too much of the tinfoil hat crowd.
I couldn't agree more. Either Dear Abby was taken or Abbey is pandering ideas. Either way it stinks to high heaven.
"You still have register at 18? Even with an all-voluntary military?"
Only dudes, chicks don't have to...
Gee. I guess I'm out of touch.
LoL
The idea that war is not the answer to the world's problems would have left Hitler in power...but that is preferable to these non-thinking rubes. OK, you don't want your children to go off to war...is that because the candidates you vote for are attempting to cause us to lose in Iraq? Is it because the candidates you support are attempting to restrict money for equipment and training and you don't want YOUR children to suffer the consequences of your votes? How about support victory and maybe your children won't end up in Iraq. And remember to warn them...if they don't go to school and get a good education they might end up in the Senate.
That is something that will have to change if we ever have a national emergency that requires a draft. Can you imagine the hubbub of men getting called up to go to war while women are still getting job preferences because of their sex?
LOL! But true.
Huh. I saw the title and the first thing I thought of was the shameless Democrats kicking over rocks to find "Iraq war veterans" to run in the last election. Talk about props!
One kid they found, Patrick Murphy, actually knocked off the incumbent Republican in my district (thanks to the votes from the sliver of Democrat parasite nest Philadelphia which is gerry-mandered into the district) and he's now my Congressman! Turned out Murphy was just an "in-the-rear-with-the-gear" lawyer in Iraq who probably spent his time devising "rules of engagement" and doing ACLU dirty work prosecuting Marines for "war crimes".
"Can you imagine the hubbub of men getting called up to go to war while women are still getting job preferences because of their sex?"
Sounds like a winning plan...don't need women in a conscripted armed forces...
