Taiwan President Declares Taiwan Must Seek Independence

Taiwanese President Chen Shui-bian, in an abrupt move on Sunday, declared that Taiwan must seek independence.

"On the 25th birthday of FAPA (the Formosan Association for Public Affairs), I want to put forward the 'four musts and one no' call. They are: Taiwan must seek independence, must rectify its name, must have a new constitution and must seek development," Chen said at the dinner party marking the 25th anniversary of founding of FAPA, a US- based pro-independence group formed by overseas Taiwanese.

The island of Taiwan, formerly known as Formosa and officially called the Republic of China, was site of the Chinese Nationalist government-in-exile at the end of the Chinese Civil War in 1949.

In explaining the "four musts and one no," Chen said that Taiwan's seeking independence owed to the country's being a sovereign state, independent of the People's Republic of China, and that independence was common dream and goal of Taiwan's people.

He said the country should apply for membership of the United Nations under the name "Taiwan," frame a new constitution and develop its economy and democracy in keeping with being an independent nation.

No, they aren't commie lovers. China is viewed by most as "barely" communist these days. Take a look at Hong Kong. It's about as free as Singapore, and freer than places like Malaysia.

I'm very glad A-Bian did this. Is it going anywhere now? No. But to take this stand is a slap in the face to the ChiComs and a firmly placed stake in the debate over Taiwan's future.

There has been a lot of equivocation and compromise on Taiwan's (and A-Bian's) part due to international politics. It is very important to move the center of the debate toward Taiwan independence or it would drift over toward the Beijing position, ie reunification under communism.

My opinion of Chen Shui "da" bien couldn't be lower. I really think he's trying to start a war in order to keep his power... I have begun hearing rumblings from friends on the island that maybe a Chinese invasion wouldn't be such a bad thing.

zook, if we wanted to hear Beijing's position on this we'd just dig up Mao.

Your vitriolic, extreme attacks are tiresome.

Yes, but only because of Taiwan. The PRC treads lightly with Hong Kong to keep the cash flowing, and to keep the image that Taiwan could integrate as peacefully, and remain as free as before. That's just good diplomacy.

(Diplomacy, as Will Rodgers said, as being the art of saying "Nice doggy..." while looking for a rock.)

China is pretending to be peaceful lately. Either they do nothing, or they end up looking like the same old baddies. Taiwan can't lose, China won't attack.

Sssssshhhh ... don't say that around here. We've got people changing their pants every post they're so scared. The level of cowardice would be amusing were it not so pathetic.

I'm glad that an event that could potentially lead to war with China has a grand total of one thread, not in breaking news, with less than 50 responses. Anna Nicole Smith and Ann Coulter have really stolen the show

People feel more comfortable discussing deceased blonde bimbos that confronting the harsh realities of war.

In light of the Olympic pressure, Tibet should do the same.

Perhaps this'll be the Archduke Ferdinand moment that gets everything started? Sure hope not!

Tiresome to you perhaps, but to me they're fresh as all outdoors.

And this is not Beijing's position. I suspect it's the position of the KMT and of many "conservatives" in our own State Department.

I think you're lying. I don't believe for a moment that you actually rolled on the floor laughing your ass off. Prove it.

And I checked your homepage to find any sign of your knowledge or experience with either Taiwan or China. I found none.

They expect to take over Australia--which has so much needed land for their people.

If they tried that, would they REALLY be prepared to have the ENTIRE Western world defending Australia? Even France and Germany. Not that they matter that much...

No. I'm flexible enough that little bothers that, if I'm interested.

Sounds like you may have some judgments toward me re that. If so, those can be hazardous.

Do you see the U.S. government as being unwilling to confront China over this now? Due to Iraq, or for some other reason?

Economics, and fear of HUGE American losses...that's why.

Keep in mind they see any US interference over Taiwan as their "Monroe Doctrine" being challenged...

BEIJING - China will boost military spending by 17.8 percent this year, a spokesman for the national legislature said Sunday, continuing more than a decade of double-digit annual increases that have raised concerns among the United States and China's neighbors.

I'm pretty fierce about the topic without such details. I don't need both. I also tend to think that most folks will only believe such details if they dig them out themselves.
