What's Happening to Conservative Websites?
vanity | 3-7-07 | Bob J

I have diligently watched the rise in size and influence of conservative websites, including Free Republic, over the last 7-8 years. I have been shocked and concerned over the drop in traffic at the most popular ones over the last year or so. There was good growth up until 2006 but since then there has been a steady downtrend that would crash any other market.

Anyone have any ideas as to what is happening? I'm out of explanations. The deficiencies in alexa.com are noted, but even if the numbers aren't accurate you're still comparing off numbers to off numbers so the decline is consistent.

Two reasons:

Google Blogs are trending up.

Conservatives are infighting.

I respect you for standing up for your husband. Admirable. Never met him or read his posts but it's a good wife that supports her husband.

Well, yes okay. You got me.

If the nomination somehow turns out to be Rudy, this will be exceptionally nasty.

I haven't bothered with your posting history, I've read enough in realtime. I don't think you're from DU. I think you're one of the moveon spikes. That cross won't cover your disruption for long.

"If the nomination somehow turns out to be Rudy, this will be exceptionally nasty."

It's not exclusive to Rudy; if the candidate isn't Hunter or Gingrich.

Yep. A lot of the thoughtful veteran posters who contributed so much to a well-reasoned back and forth don't show up much anymore. It's not the same place it used to be. A lot more bitterness, a lot less intellect. It's very sad.

now-a-days you cannot argue an issue. If you blast Bush on the border and spending, etc..you get flamed. If you support the War in Iraq- you get called a BushBot... LOL! too funny... I wish we could all stick to issues and what is good for America instead of being "fans" of politicians are partisan party folks.....

I agree.

For instance I believe Rudy is good on spending issues while Hunter is not.

I also believe Hunter is good on social issues and the fence while Rudy is not.

Yet if I argue for Rudy on spending issues or Hunter on social issues people assume I'm for the one candidate and against the other.

I think you have your preferences set so all threads appear. The Catholic Caucus, Spurgeon threads etc. are posted in the religion forum.

please get all this arguing out before the primaries...

Posters that call names or are otherwise harsh and divisive are unlikely to change their tactics then......they'll just move on to the next issue.

The right wing seems to have disappeared in the U.S...
Civil War brewing?.. Maybe ... somethings up..

What's that saying? It's that awkward time when it's too late to work within the system and too early to start shooting. Well something like that.

Purging conservatives from conservative websites always struck me as a losing proposition.

I can think of a long and distinguished list of posters who were run off.

That was a poor idea, as is letting a conservative site decline into being a playpen of deluded liberals, who appear to have a good deal of influence over purging the now-missing conservatives.

Agreed wolf, very tiring. When I started coming here in 2001 it was a discussion forum. The interchange was phenomenal. I always learned something from watching the various proponents of positions rationally debate their points. Now...well what it's become is as obvious as it is sad.
