Mayan priests will purify a sacred archaeological site to eliminate "bad spirits" after President Bush visits next week, an official with close ties to the group said Thursday.
"That a person like (Bush), with the persecution of our migrant brothers in the United States, with the wars he has provoked, is going to walk in our sacred lands, is an offense for the Mayan people and their culture," Juan Tiney, the director of a Mayan nongovernmental organization with close ties to Mayan religious and political leaders, said Thursday.
Bush's seven-day tour of Latin America includes a stopover beginning late Sunday in Guatemala. On Monday morning he is scheduled to visit the archaeological site Iximche on the high western plateau in a region of the Central American country populated mostly by Mayans.
Tiney said the "spirit guides of the Mayan community" decided it would be necessary to cleanse the sacred site of "bad spirits" after Bush's visit so that their ancestors could rest in peace. He also said the rites which entail chanting and burning incense, herbs and candles would prepare the site for the third summit of Latin American Indians March 26-30.
Bush's trip has already has sparked protests elsewhere in Latin America, including protests and clashes with police in Brazil hours before his arrival. In Bogota, Colombia, which Bush will visit on Sunday, 200 masked students battled 300 riot police with rocks and small homemade explosives.
The tour is aimed at challenging a widespread perception that the United States has neglected the region and at combatting the rising influence of Venezuelan leftist President Hugo Chavez, who has called Bush "history's greatest killer" and "the devil."
Iximche, 30 miles west of the capital of Guatemala City, was founded as the capital of the Kaqchiqueles kingdom before the Spanish conquest in 1524.
You mean the kind of Mayan priests who would cut out the living hearts of their human sacrifices? Yeah, I can see they might be picky.
I bet it's Al Sharpton in a feather suit....
Meadow Muffin
He should try to sneak across our border and see what Bush does to stop his silly ass.
I thought they only purified to eliminate "heap bad spirits." Learn something new every day.
I hear they do a sacred dance called the "Chicken Dance".
They'd have to use a shovel if it'd been me visiting
That's nice. These scumbags will now be in practice in case the islamists start cutting heads off down there.
Hopefully this "purification" process won't involve human sacrifice. (/sarc/)
I heard that the Mayan Priests are also selling Carbon Offsets, which are just as effective as their rituals.
Dang!
Does that mean we got to purify our side of the border 12,000,000 times after they get all their illegal criminal "brothers" back?
You mean, purify the area of the sulfur odor?
""That a person like (Bush), with the persecution of our migrant brothers in the United States, with the wars he has provoked, is going to walk in our sacred lands, is an offense for the Mayan people and their culture," Juan Tiney, the director of a Mayan nongovernmental organization with close ties to Mayan religious and political leaders, said Thursday."
Bush is one of his migrant brothers best allies.
"Nah. It's so easy even someone from the Stone Age can do it."
Actually, the search engine isn't working today, but even if it was it wouldn't have mattered, because the title is different.
"That a person like (Bush), with the persecution of our migrant brothers in the United States,...."
That line just cracks me up, if anything, Pres Bush has made it easier for illegals to invade our country!
Stick with rubbing sticks together, Juan.
Are you kidding?
Kindred spirits...
Heads... beating hearts... it's all the same.
Jess sayin'...
Does anyone really care what these pagans do after the President leaves the area?
Tell it to the Spanish Cuzco.
Seems the memory of rivers of blood from human sacrifice has faded from the collective consciousness. And where, pray tell, are the holy cathedrals of Mayan worship these days? Mel Gibson is quite amused.
You mean nothing?

or...

He's an ignorant fool, or a liar.
I do agree, however, that the "migrant brothers" should flee persecution here and return to their oh-so-superior homelands...
I can already see the TV promo --
"We're Mayan priests -- and we've been sawing up people for millenia. Throat-cutting Islamic terrorists? Muhammed-come-latelies, as far as we're concerned, and real pikers when it comes to vivisectioning fellow human beings--but we share their yearning for the 9th Century. Viva Atzlan!!"
The AP might have made up this story entirely.
Failing that, they might have paid some people to pretend to be Mayan priests and to pretend to 'purify' the site.
Failing that, these Mayan priests are most likely frauds on their own account without AP's involvement but people who are certain of getting US press notice for 'purifying' things.
And I didn't know there were Mayans that far south.
My bad. I see it is in Guatemala. Plenty of Mayans there.
Isn't that the religion that practiced human sacrifice and tore hearts out of living people?
exactly what I meant. better yet, bring a suitcase full of ganja with, too.in the unlikely event of capture, tell the press you are an angel of mercy bringing dying cancer patients this weed free of charge.
Ha ha, I was just thinking the exact same thing! :)
"Does anyone care........"
Apparently Juan Carlos Llorca and AP, not that this matters to the rest of us.
Uh... Guatemala is majority Mayan.
Mayan priests?
How about pagan priests?
Schmucks.
how bout clearing the bad spirt of poverty, drug cartels and rampant crime in the area while they're at it.
"There's only one kind of soap that can get these hands clean, mister. Lava!"
I want to know if these priests have been continuously practicing this "religion" since the Mayan empire fell in the 9th century or if this is a new-age 20th century revival. If it is the latter, it has about as much legitimacy as those nutballs in the UK who list "The Force" as their religion.
That's just what I was thinking.
That, and where on earth will they ever find a virgin to sacrifice?
Juan Tiney is not a full blood Maya. He is a college professor and leftist from the lying POS Rigoberta Menchu school of communist/socialist rabble-rousers. I think his mother was an indigina, but I don't know which tribe. Anything he says is highly suspect, and he is using those poor Maya for his own political, collectivist purposes.
Don't laugh. Part of the agenda is killing white people and stealing their property.
I heard somewhere that the Mayan calendar absolutely ended at our date of Dec. 21, 2008 when they expected the cycles of the Earth to end.
So I guess they can either argue that Bush's polluted footprints on their sacred soil ended the Earth and all life as we know it--or they're wasting their efforts since the world ends soon anyway.
Whichever, it's Bush's fault.
This is just more Marxist political theater. Anyone seriously interested the topic, aside from making easy wisecracks about Mayan sacrifices, should do a Google search on Rigoberta Menchu and other Guatemalan/Mayan political writers. The disciples of Marx and Engels have been very busy in that part of the world.
We should purify our welfare rolls.
That's exactly the way I translated the AP doublespeak,
"... Juan Tiney, the director of a Mayan nongovernmental organization with close ties to Mayan religious and political leaders, said Thursday"
Cordially,
"Is the purification ritual complicated?"
Define "complicated". One of the rituals (so I've read) was for the ruler/priest to cut his penis with a knife and bleed on the ground which supposedly sanctified the ground with new life. Think Juan will be up for that? Complicated, no. Incredibly ignorant, well, I hate to go against the PC crowd, but YES!
Additionally, the Mayan calendar ends in 2012 (I can't remember which month). I can't say I put much stock in it. I always figured they got tired after figuring it out manually, and just said, "Oh, screw it! We won't be here anyway."
"You mean the kind of Mayan priests who would cut out the living hearts of their human sacrifices?"
Exactly. F**king hypocrites.
Cuzco was a pretty skunky Peruvian beer back in the day...maybe they'll use the alcohol for purification?
