At Correspondents Dinner: Brian Williams Belches 'Battle Hymn of the Republic'

On Thursday’s morning shows, all three networks seemed to take delight in showing "MC Rove" ham it up for Wednesday night’s Radio & Television Correspondents Association dinner.

None, however, showed the video footage of the distinguished Brian Williams, anchor of the "NBC Nightly News," burping the "Battle Hymn of the Republic."

The Los Angeles Times, one media outlet that did report the event, covered it this way:

For their first act, [comedians Colin Mochrie and Brad Sherwood] recruited NBC anchor Williams and Cheryl Gould, senior vice president of NBC News, to deliver the sound effects for a nonsensical skit about a hunter and a lawyer -- one that culminated with the two volunteers burping "The Battle Hymn of the Republic" to the incredulous delight of their colleagues.

It isn't the fun we mind, it is the nothing sacred part.

You have a stop watch? Let's time how quickly someone calls him a racist. And this will be reported by the same "media" that was howling with laughter AT Rove.

Lets hear him bletch some verses of the Torah or a passage from the Koran just to show he's not an equal opportunity transparent bigot.

If Williams belched out "Allah Akbar", NBC's management would meet CAIR's demand that they frog march Brian to their HQ for beheading...

I think you're taking it too seriously. It's politics. It's a game in Washington. Sure there are serious consepuences to political decisions, but that doesn't mean you can't enjoy the game. I have liberal friends and I laugh along with them at W jokes, and they laugh along with me at Clinton jokes. Big deal.

I'm sure he has no idea why anyone would find that offensive. He must be totally ignorant of American history as well as basic Christianity.

They have been going on forever. Even President Bush gets in on the act. Remember Laura caught some flax when she got dirty at one of them? I think it is just part of the culture.

Reagan was also in serious situations, but he wasn't serious all the time, including at these dinners. I don't know anybody that is serious all the time - well, I do but I'd never want them to be President.

I was laughing at him, too.

He was funny.

And who cares if someone calls him racist?

Yeah, jokes and uppercuts were a real hoot during WW11, Korean War and Vietnam, they should take their dog and pony show over to Iraq to entertain the troops.

So are you saying, then, that once elected to public office, one had better hold to the campaign promise to never laugh, to never be self-deprecating, to never provide some levity, and under no circumstances ever, EVER crack a smile? I mean, there are serious issues to attend to! Taking a break for a few hours to let loose with a few giggles is just reprehensible!!!!!Eleventy11!

It's no wonder tensions are high on FR and elsewhere when all it takes to deeply and egregiously offend people is a burp. What next? Snickering at a funeral is suddenly a capital offense?

Plenty of serious issues abound. Plenty of people take them very seriously. But since it isn't for you or anyone else to decide for anyone else what is and is not funny, I'd tend to agree that many, many people here need to lighten up. Way up.

He's a journalist and liberal. Of course, he's ignorant of history and christianity along with nearly every other subject under the sun; sciolism is required of all journalists.

It brings a cynical thought to mind, some people no longer deserve to live in a free country.

Which brings another thought . . . is a country where someone cannot (tastelessly) belch the Battle Hymn of the Republic free?

This forum has rules. The White House Correspondent's Dinner does not. It's one thing to limit one's own behavior because of a sense of propriety, and another to limit other's behavior because of one's sense of propriety. In this case, I mean . . . .
