Friends say Fred Thompson is moving closer to announcing for the Republican nomination for President and is expected to make a formal announcement this summer.
Yesterday I asked an old time friend and advisor to Thompson about what Chattanooga (Tenn.) Times editor (and longtime Thompson friend) Tom Griscoms told me last month. Griscom had told me that he felt the former Volunteer State senator was leaning about 4 to 5 on a scale of 10 toward running." The reaction was, Id say hes 90% toward running as of today.
HUMAN EVENTS also learned that, in late March, Thompson held a meeting at his McLean, Va., home with a handful of longtime friends to discuss whether a race for the Republican nomination for President was doable. Among the questions raised were if this is the right time for a bid by the 64-year-old attorney and television actor, whether a campaign would be too big a sacrifice for Thompson and his family, and if there was the necessary time to cobble together the campaign structure and raise the big dollars necessary to compete with long-running rivals such as Rudy Giuliani, Mitt Romney and John McCain (a close friend of Thompson and someone the Tennessean campaigned strongly for in the 2000 presidential race). Thompson also reportedly voiced concerns at the March gathering at his home that a campaign of his own would affect his friendship with the Arizona senator.
The Thompson kitchen cabinet, sources told me, all assured the former senator that his concerns should not rule out a race.

He’ll turn the race around if he does. I’m looking forward to it.
If he saw last nights debate he was.
I will get down on my knees and swear to God I will vote for him if he finds Chrissy Matthews and kicks his ass sometime in the near future.
ya might want to correct the title....
I don’t what happened there? LOL
It was correct at first, then I refreshed the screen and presto! What’s up with that? :)
He's gonna run rings around them as President.
That'll be the sound Rudy McRomney makes when the grown-up gets into the race.
He better hurry up.
After Romney’s performance last night, he’s going to start looking like the man to beat.
“It was correct at first, then I refreshed the screen and presto!”
So you’re the culprit...Richardson is that you? LMAO
Ouch! It would take about six of me to be fat Billy!
what many people don’t know is that Thompson HATES TO CAMPAIGN...
he will hold out as long as he possibly can...
these campaigns are starting waaaaaaay too early for my liking anyway!
Fred needs to be a man and just get it out there. He’s going to strategize himself into becoming the next Ross Perot, which doesn’t translate into a presidency, if he doesn’t announce soon. Romney looked strong last night.
JulieAnnie exposed himself last night for what he is: an effective socially liberal MAYOR of a very liberal town, nothing more, nothing less. His non answer on abortion(OK with Roe being upheld) RUINS him with the Republican base.
McCain also did himself harm with the base with his defense of taxpayer funding of embryonic stem cell research and his willingness to include RATS in a McCain administration. Note to John: YOU’RE RUNNING FOR THE REPUBLICAN NOMINATION.
Mitt the FlipFlopper was the likely winner if you had to pick one, though none really impressed me. But Mitt’s public record on hot button issues like abortion and gun control and his gaffes like “I’ve been a life-long hunter” will be easy fodder for Fred to make mincemeat of him on.
I’m 99% sure Fred is in and after tonight’s speech I believe there’ll be no doubt whatsoever.
Run, Fred, run! Your country desperately needs you. After last night’s “debate” more so than ever.
Not to get too far afield but I have never understood how the good folks of NM could have ever voted for the “Los Alamos Loser” to be governor???
wassup with that?
and to think he thinks he could be POTUS material?
talk about illusions of grandeur! LMAO
Romney was very impressive last night, McCain seemed senile, and Giuliani seemed lost. Fred was on Hannity and seemed surprisingly frail. I think he won’t hold up as well on stage w the fit Romney.
He’s very slick, and has a big following from his days as the 3rd district Rep. There’s no republican candidate that would has a chance against him here.
And there we see a demonstration of the limp-wristed RINOs who frittered away the Republican majority by pandering to the far Left side of the isle...
Romney looks like a nancy boy compared to Fred.
I want someone who is passionate about getting in there and straightening out some of this mess.
