It is amazing! They all looked equally honored to be in the others presence.

HER MAJESTY QUEEN ELIZABETH II: Mr. President, I wondered whether I should start this toast saying, “When I was here in 1776” — (laughter and applause.)

She has a sense of humor!!!!!!

This pic was taken as she listened to a satellite conversation with the two Russian cosmonauts and one US flight engineer currently manning the International Space Station.

She really enjoyed hearing them.

Thanks Dolly, but your not late. I just finished posting!

The Queen had an action packed day and flew home tonight. No pics were posted until quite late in the day.

Apparently President Bush will be going to KS in the morning to see the tornado damage, so you daughter/husband will miss him (not that one normally sees the POTUS on a WH tour).

I believe it is the case that when the POTUS is at the WH, the US flag flies over it, and when he’s not there, there’s no flag. Someone more knowledgeable might be able to confirm this?

Call me an old softie, but for some reason this pic made me mist up. How precious and charming. While I'm sure meeting the Queen was nice, I bet this little girl was more excited about wearaing the tiara and probably made her mama crazy over it until the big day!

Hi Deb. Thanks so much for the great articles. I found the one by James Lewis to be exceptional. I especially like this closing paragraph:

So W. is the man. He's made the toughest decisions, and he was far and away the best choice for this very hard time. I admire him, and also see his limits. That's life. We don't get perfection in presidents. Lincoln had a squeaky voice. Washington had false teeth. Jefferson kept slaves. Humans are flawed.

It's too bad so many people here on FR and elsewhere on the political Right don't acknowledge this crucial point. They are constantly chasing after a false image -- a myth, really -- of Ronald Reagan, and are constantly disappointed to find that everyone in the present does not measure up to the myth.

The U.S. flag always flies over the White House, whether or not the President is home. I had the opportunity to go into D.C. today and the Royal Standard was flying at Blair House. Quite a thrill to see it.

The flag tradition you’ve mentioned is true in England. The Royal Standard only flies when the Queen is in residence, whether in Scotland or England, etc.

Snugs might confirm tomorrow, but I studied in London for a semester and am confident about the Royal Standard, especially since it was in D.C. today. ;) I’m not sure what they do w/ the Union Jack in these cases, it’s been awhile!
