He’s a Democrat. Do you expect him to know anything about how to spend money in a productive manner?

This is how I shop on a shoestring 21 dollar a WEEK budget.

BTW, I buy 15 dollars of food per MONTH to feed myself.

1 bag of masa corn meal 1$

Chili powder: 1 dollar per bottle.

1 bag of frijoles pintos. $2.50

1 lb bag of rice: $.89

Corn tortillas: 89 cents.

3 bags of rice noodles: 2 dollars

1 bottle of chicken bullion: 1 dollar

1 pack of teabags (Drinking iced tea so I can kick the habit of drinking pop) .69 cents.

1 box of macaroni 80 cents.

For vegetation, I grow my own dandelion salads. But in the cold winter, where produce is a premium in Minnesota, I usually get dandelion leaves cheap, or I eat dehydrated seaweed. which I can get for about 2-3 dollars a package.

For protein, I usually buy chicken leg quarters or I buy soymeal. Soymeal costs around 2 bucks a pound where I live. I buy 2 pounds.

But then again, he’s liberal. I’m conservative. Notice a correlation on how much more I got with less money?

At our Wal-Mart the roasted chickens cost a dollar if they’re in the case over a certain amount of time. I know some retirees on a budget who get up there and take advantage of it. When I buy a roasted chicken, it usually provides 3 full meals for my husband and I. My DIL grew up poor with no food stamps and she can cook anything and make it taste good. Lots of Mexican food. She is also nutrition conscious but she still fries bologna, they have spam and vienna sausage and my son’s favorite meal is tuna on toast. I just thought of this, we butchered a beef and she didn’t want any of the roasts, I wonder if she just doesn’t know how to cook them, I’ll have to ask.

Around here you do have to take such a course to receive WIC.

Wow!!!! That is so impressive. You are truly a role model on how to eat well on a budget. I am trying to figure out how you can eat 90 meals or so on this group of foods. I definitely feel I am wasteful and spend too much money now. I think that for a family of five I now spend 470 dollars a month and that does not include eating out. Well the kids are about to get a rude awakening. lol. Good job seriously!!!!!

That’s a start. I have a friend that used to receive WIC, based on the way she cooks, such a course is obviously not a requirement around here.

And by the way, you notice why all these poor welfare recipients are fat?

It’s because they’re used to eating crap. One day, I was eating some mock duck I got from a neighborhood Thai deli with rice noodles and bean sprouts while I had a cup of homemade lemon and ginger iced tea.

Some welfare recipient hip hop type kids saw I was eating something with chopsticks. The fuckers were harassing me for my food. They were about to steal my food and my drink until I told them what the food consisted of.

I asked “You know what mock duck and bean sprouts are and do you like lemon ginger iced tea?” The inner city kids said “Naww, foo’ dat sounds nasty”.

They thought I was eating some greasy fried rice and coca cola.

By the way, to any Minnesota freepers around, we should plan a trip to I94 leading from Wisconsin to Minnesota and shoot every Illinois license plate that crosses the border. I have a strange feeling that these kids were FIB welfare leeches.

Just hit up the local Mexican mercados and Chinese grocery stores. You can always get good, delicious food there for CHEAP. And notice, you don’t see too many fat or fat Asians FOB. The fat ones usually can speak perfect English.

Thanks for that advice. I also like some Korean so that might be interesting too. Definitely if you see a fat Asian - typically at least a second or third generation American. Yes sterotypical, but true.

I’m looking for the steaks, frozen dinners, frozen pizza, and boneless chicken breasts that I always see food stampers buying along with the beer, wine, cigarettes, lotto tickets, make-up and pet food that the food stamp money frees up their cash for.

you forgot to mention that coffee is NOT a necessity. that $2.50 will buy meat or fresh veggies.
food stamps should be covering necessities not luxuries.
also there’s the fact that food stamps are meant to SUPPLEMENT a family’s budget, not pay for everything.

you get much bigger veggies growing your own too. any one of the squash, zuccini, or cucumbers i pulled off my plants last year was more veggie than a 4 pack of the same from the store.

I’m not one of them, but I know people who think they will perish without their coffee. I really like my tea, but it’s about three cents a bag. There’s room even in $21/week for a few small treats - but over a fifth of your money on jam is dumb - Ryan wants diabetes and tooth decay? Then he can complain about the link between poverty and poor health.

I sure hope that when the gov’t gives out food stamps they give out a sample shopping list and weekly meal planner and the addresses of websites giving healthy cheap menus.

Uh, the people on foodstamps have lots of other avenues to get food products.

The Salvation Army in our town has periodic 'give aways' of canned goods and other non-perishables. People start lining up at 7 am waiting for the doors to open.

That's just one of many charities that are willing to help out people who are struggling financially.

Actually, I’m not against giving any politician any dose of reality

Well, I sure hope they went through the qualifying process and gave up their regular pay during the time they received food stamps

This article is bull. And it is bull because it's based on $21/wk for one person and the average family that receives food stamps isn't one person.

Exactly right. But it's bull for another reason. The average recipient has some income, such that the $21 is to supplement that. The food stamps arent intended to be the only source of food money.

When a single person has NO INCOME the daily amount is about $5.15 a day or $36 a week. Anyone who cant feed himself on that is an idiot.

No, you’re right. Enlisted military families qualify for food stamps in many cases.

I thought they sold the food stamps for drugs then the drug dealers sell the food stamps back to the government.
