BEIJING (AFP) - China aims to launch its first lunar orbiter later this year, part of a three-step plan it hopes will eventually see moon samples brought back to Earth, state media said Sunday.
The launch of the Chang'e I, envisaged in the second half of 2007, would be a landmark for China's space programme, China's space agency chief Sun Laiyan was quoted as saying by the official Xinhua news agency.
"The moon probe project is the third milestone in China's space technology after satellite and manned spacecraft projects, and a first step for us in exploring deep space," he said in the report.

We fiddle over Al Gore's "Global Warming"--- and the Chinese 'Red'volution marches on ...
Excellent. Maybe this’ll prod Congress to up funding for NASA. For a change.
The good Rev. Moon had better watch himself then.
Their ultimate goal is to claim the Moon for themselves--- and use it as a military base to control & spy on us . Then we'll all have to live under Ch'eye'nese law...
I think they'll have their hands full *getting* to the moon. As to setting up a military "base" there, it's a long way to earth for supplies, and a few hundred million dollars per trip. I don't think it's happening any time soon. If we can't do it, they sure as heck can't. Note that their first manned space mission was based on technology bought from the Russians. Only NASA has been to the moon. And it's not selling that technology to the Chinese.
