Scottish giants beat Beckham-less LA Galaxy in soccer friendly

CARSON, Calif. (AP) -Kris Boyd scored in the 56th minute to give Glasgow Rangers a 1-0 victory over the Los Angeles Galaxy in a soccer friendly Wednesday.

Chris Burke passed from the right edge of the penalty area to Alan Hutton, who found Boyd from the right flank. Boyd, who led the Scottish Premier League with 20 goals, beat his defender and scored from 13 meters.

"They held the ball in spots and got us running a little bit,'' said Galaxy defender Tyrone Marshall. "When we get back to (Major League Soccer), we can use that to our advantage in terms of how we play.''

The Galaxy had its best chance to score in the 17th minute. Santino Quaranta intercepted Hutton's back pass and started off on a breakaway, but goalkeeper Allan McGregor made a sliding tackle to deflect the ball.

McGregor also dived to parry Nathan Sturgis' shot with both hands in the 68th minute.

The game was the first of a heavy exhibition schedule against international opponents for the Galaxy, who later this season will be joined by former England captain David Beckham.'

The part that is truly news: they game was settled by playing soccer, and not the scissors, paper, stone nonsense that ends so many matches.

Keep in mind this is soccer in California. A game generally played by children with little interest by adult natives.

BTW “Football rules” - “Soccer sucks”

Mate, you would probably enjoy the version played in Scotland and Britain.

Fast paced and exciting with much less of the diving and petulance of the European game.Perhaps not as skilful but more watchable...

It’s a sport without TV commercials. Perhaps that’s why you don’t know about it.

During the fall, University of Southern California football fans troop into Bodean's Barbecue in London, one of the few places in the UK where one can watch the Trojans play.

Mate,we know you dont like ‘soccer’. And thats fine.

So stop posting your silly comments please.I hate baseball but dont feel the need to ridicule the sport.

p.s the attendance was over 15,000 in fact.Rangers play in Scotland to an average of 50,000.
