Area homes damaged; residents left stranded
Killeen Daily Herald ^ | Saturday, May 26, 2007 | Justin Cox

The sizable rainstorm that hit Central Texas on Thursday did far more damage than its predecessor did earlier in the week, leaving dozens of homes damaged in its wake.

With the ground still saturated by Tuesday's rainfall, the clouds that burst over Central Texas on Thursday brought flooding almost immediately. The continuing downpour, leading to five weather-related deaths, took more lives than any storm to hit the Killeen area in recent memory. The water did not discriminate with its victims, taking the lives of both young and old.

Meteorologist Jennifer Dunn, with the National Weather Service in Fort Worth, said the area is likely to receive several more inches of rain, adding to the 5 to 7 inches that have been deposited since Tuesday.

Saw the flooding in Killeen on Fox this morning. I can believe it because our yard was a lake. Thankfully, it soon ran off. The rain was coming in sideway sheets against our house. They must have a dam open because the river is down so they’re expecting some more flooding from run-offs.

Rains in mid Missouri have pushed Lake of the Ozarks up by 12 inches over the past week. Flood gates are open at Bagnel.

Our backyard is still a lake, but our Golden Retriever puppy is happy about this. He’s convinced that we had it installed especially for him to run around in, and anti-retrieve my door mat to (why does that dog insist on dragging the door mat to the knee deep part and then look to me to retrieve it?!). As I type, he is tossing his stuffed fox into the water, then jumping in after it.
When my weather bug chirped at me about 30 min ago we had 5 flood warnings/watches up. Down to two now (I’m thinking some of them were repeats of the same ones or something).

I bet Belton Lake isn’t down anymore...

Here is an AP article I just saw, complete with a video: http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20070526/ap_on_re_us/plains_storms

I know what you mean. Our horse, um, 5 month old newfie mutt loves all the mud. He and our other mutt have tracked it all over the house and onto the beds. Bounce, splash, bounce!!!

This is the kind of weather that brings snakes into unusual areas. Be careful when you go into quiet areas of your property. Don’t be surprised to find them in your garage or animal shelters.

If I find a snake in my garage, my screams will be heard on the other side of the world. And then I will probably destroy our car running it into walls in an attempt to run over the intruder. I’d better let the hubby go out first for a few days. :P

I guess I should have thought of that myself, since I have already noticed that our front porch has become a rollypolly emergency shelter. You can’t walk to the front door without stepping on them!

Thanks for the note of caution though!

Not to worry, my fellow Texans.

I understand a contingent of New Orleans compassionate are on their way to provide relief, and educate us on assistance.

I have not seen Belton Lake, but from my view out the window here at home, Lake Travis is really up! It was less than 2months ago that the lake was down MORE THAN 60 FEET! It looked terrible--little and not so little "islands" appeared everywhere.

It looks like our long drought is over --LOL!

Our ranch on the Lampassas river has gotten so much rain that the Lampassas river is no longer just a trickle--it is a fast flowing river that is now higher than it has been in years.

We've still got rain in the forecast for the next 10 days. Enough, already!!!

Yes, the snakes are out. I saw one in the river this morning headed staight for our property, yikes!

After I beat the last live snake to death in the middle of the living room floor with a cast iron skillet, the cat is now an indoor pet. Oh yeah, the neighbors said they heard my screams and thought about calling the cops... well, thanks but no thanks, next time I’m in serious need of help I’ll make sure not to rely on them. Ok maybe it wasn’t exactly screams of terror but very loud cursing of the snake and the cat, lol.

Burglars should be warned before threading in your house. LOL

And scorpions. (Yesterday I got my first-ever sting.)
