I was one day in the lobby of the House of Representatives when a bill was taken up appropriating money for the benefit of a widow of a distinguished naval officer. Several beautiful speeches had been made in its support, rather, as I thought, because it afforded the speakers a fine opportunity for display than from the necessity of convincing anybody, for it seemed to me that everybody favored it. The Speaker was just about to put the question, when Crockett arose. Everybody expected, of course, that he was going to make one of his characteristic speeches in support of the bill. He commenced:

Do a search on the internet for “sockdologer” and there are many hits. Great story, wish modern politicians were like that.
One of my favorites. I like Horacio Bunce.
A lot of libs don’t understand that the government must not be in the charity business.
When a government office funnels money to do “good deeds” you have more money bleeding off than you have getting where it’s needed. Even if you don’t like what they’re dong you can’t “opt out” of donating.
When a private charity stops doing things as they should you can stop giving them your money.
Whether government charity is a “good idea” is irrelevant. The states never gave that power to the federal government in the first place.
“The Constitution is no impediment to our form of government.” P.J. O’Rourke.
Wow!! Great post. Never seen this one before.
Sorry Sir, but I must take issue with the “don’t understand” portion of your post.
Libs understand perfectly that if it were not for their ability to take money from the productive to give to the un-productive, the un-productive would not vote for them and keep them in power.
Libs need conservatives to create the wealth that they redistribute. Conservatives don’t need libs for anything.
Man...I just finished reading it and was OVERWHELMED by the convictions of Horatio Bunce and how he was able remind Col. Davy Crockett about what the Acts of Congress could do to the Moral Fiber of the USA...as we can all see today how far Our Nation has fallen from those old times of conviction, integrity and discernemnt.
Libs understand perfectly that if it were not for their ability to take money from the productive to give to the un-productive, the un-productive would not vote for them and keep them in power.
I think the majority of lib-dems (especially the “progressives”) live up to the name “Useful Idiot.”
They want the government to “take care of them.” When confronted with the facts about how previous socialist/communist governments “took care of their people” they go into serious denial.
Look at how few understand that "free healthcare" is not free!
I could NOT stop reading this piece. Thanks!
(Davey Crockett was one of my heroes even 50 years ago)
Moreover, while Crockett was a great hero and, in this case (if true) had the right response, do not forget he was a Whig, he supported the Whig program, and as such he did favor helping businesses in the form of roads, harbor improvements, canals built at public expense, and so on.
A few years ago, several of us went together, and got 535 copys of this story, and sent it to every member of the House, and Senate.
Yesterday, I saw the beginning of a hearing about $10b for homeowners in NO who suffered flood damage. The coordinator testified to corruption, whereupon Mary Landrieu declared that the amount should be $30b.
Did they also testify as to how many of them had flood insurance and what the proceeds of same were?
Horatio Bunce could predicted the results of Hurricane Katrina and the Federal government’s role in all of that.. Both men could turn in their graves over the of the current state of personal responsibility.
This has appeared on FR many times. It apparently illustrates the Conservatice ideal.
Sounds just like the 'greatest' Republican of the 19th century...Just because Crockett called himself a Whig doesn't mean he was Clay's lap dog just like the 'greatest' Republican of the 19th century
Lessee, in his short term in Congress, Crockett voted repeatedly for canals, harbors, roads, and above all, cheap public land . . . just like the greatest AMERICAN of the 19th century, Abraham Lincoln.
Powerful stuff, worthy of bookmarking and revisiting - often. I hope my Congressman and Senators like their copies, heading their way soon :) Thank you so much for posting it!
Ain’t socialism great? [uber-heavy, molasses-grade sarcasm off]
