Hospitals admit white kids with lesser emergencies
Boston Globe ^ | June 4, 2007 | SENA DESAI GOPAL

Studies have shown that white children are hospitalized more often for medical emergencies than Hispanic or black children. Researchers from George Washington University School of Medicine assumed that the disparity was because the children of color were receiving less aggressive care. But in a new study, researchers found instead that all children were admitted equally when they had true emergencies, and the white children were over-admitted for conditions that could be readily treated at home. Using data available on 8,952 children at 13 pediatric emergency rooms across the country researchers compared observed and expected admission rates for different levels of illness severity, and found that blacks , Hispanics, and whites were equally likely to be admitted if they were severely ill. However, in case of less severe illnesses such as gastroenteritis or pneumonia, which can be easily treated at home, they found that white children were 1.6 times more likely to be admitted than black or Hispanic children. Although the study was not designed to figure out why these disparities exist, lead author Dr. James Chamberlain, also of Children's National Medical Center, speculates that there may be subtle pressures from both families and hospital administrators to admit certain patients, even if it is not medically necessary.

Anecdotal experience doesn't make it so.............

I believe I put forth a disclaimer in my opening sentence.

On the other hand, experience, a master teacher, teaches us that where there is smoke there is very often fire.

Finally, I trust my instincts at least as much as you trust yours. Most likely a great deal more.

Another logical fallacy, not based in fact.

You're imagining things. It wasn't a declaration of fact, therefore your statement is a non sequitir. It is my opinion, and that much is probably clear to anyone who doesn't have too much time on his hands.

Redeem some of those twenty dollar words buy some good books.

BTW, they don't have a clear cut genetic test. Sure, they can find the two genes that cause it, they think, but they can't be sure without a biopsy of the small intestine.

The latest and greatest antibody test also has a range of responses. Seems that people without either of the two controlling genes show some degree of response.

Means everybody has a problem with gluten.

Any truth to this or is this typical Boston Globe nonsense?

Here's a link to the original article. It's a FReebie. You decide.

Maybe the existence of insurance played into the decision to admit or not to admit?

Our local hospital has a sign in the ER which says they will see medicaid patients in the Emergency Room, and will transfer medicaid patients to other hospitals, if they need to be admitted. The hospital does not admit medicaid patients.

The State Children's Health Insurance Program (SCHIP) is jointly financed by the Federal and State governments and is administered by the States.  Within broad Federal guidelines, each State determines the design of its program, eligibility groups, benefit packages, payment levels for coverage, and administrative and operating procedures.

Probably cooked his statistics to show what he wanted to. Public health is notorious for pandering to "poor" blacks and hispanics

Maybe it’s the ability of the people to pay their hospital bill. I know of two hospitals in San Diego County that closed their doors because certain categories of politically correct people have been walking into the emergency rooms and availing themselves of free medical treatment that the hospitals can’t afford. The hospitals then go broke and close.
