Company, owner fined $210,000 for hiring illegal immigrants

Wichita Business Journal - November 14, 2006

by Ken Vandruff

A Wichita company, its owner and its general manager will pay fines totaling $210,000 in a plea agreement with federal prosecutors over an alleged scheme to hire illegal immigrants.

Bob Eisel Power Coatings Inc., 3500 S. Hoover St.; Bob Eisel, owner and president; and Kenric "Butch" Steinert, general manager; were named in a 28-count indictment last August. They were charged with routinely employed Mexican nationals, knowing they were providing false identification.

Eisel and Steinert pleaded guilty to one count of making a false statement. Charges against a third defendant, Troy Cook, a company foreman, were dropped as part of a deferred prosecution agreement.

U.S. District Judge Wesley Brown fined Eisel $25,000 and ordered Steinert to pay a $10,000 fine. Each man also will serve three years probation.

Brown also levied a $175,000 fine against the company.

Federal prosecutors say the company was warned that employees were using false Social Security numbers and in response, Eisel and Steinert allegedly helped the employees get different numbers to help them keep their jobs.

How much did he profit?

If he made $1 million off of cheap labor, then it was probably worth it to him.

The company is just paying the fines that the illegals don’t want to pay.

From my own experience...the people that are hustling up illegals are greedy SOB’s...they can under bid most jobs and have put many honest guys out of business.

Fining the companies that hire illegals is probably the #1 most effective tool against illegals. Drying up the demand will dry up the desire to come here.

If the gangbangers who killed the Wichita, Kansas Mom were illegal immigrants, hopefully the business owner would not agree that it was worth it.

Mom dies keeping gang out of her bar

That would have happened with the amnesty bill. A business would pay, say, $5000 signing bonus that would cover their fine. Then they could hire that person and pay them as cheaply as ever. They'd be getting a bargain at that price... cheaper than the fine that this guy just paid.

Don’t be fooled. This is just window dressing to convince us that the illegals problem is being “dealt with”.

Anyone get to wear one of those cool new bracelets that Paris is sporting?

I hear they're SO cool!

Get 1000 teams to do this and 10 million Mexicans will be home in 12-18 months!

MAKE business stop hiring.

This is all that needs to be done (besides thefence).

Good! I wish they'd put them in jail too. They are the biggest part of the problem. If there were no jobs, illegals wouldn't come here.

It was only $7500 per new illegal they intended to hire for the company. I’d like to see the fine large enough to put a company out of business if caught.

I agree. They should make it $25K per illegal. THAT would stop a lot of them from hiring illegals. Of course, it was never enforced before. Now that other employers see these people paying this big fine they might start to think twice.

IF these jobs dried up for illegals, they would return home.

If there were no jobs, illegals wouldn’t come here............. That seems to be the problem also, our economy is so hot right now there are more jobs than workers who are willing to work. Ten years ago you could get a mexican off the corner for $ 50 all day, now it is closer to $125-150 a day. Now, why would someone hire an illegal unless he can’t find a legal to work for that kind of money.
