From NBC's Mark Murray In the the aftermath of this week's presidential debates in New Hampshire, Clinton and Romney come out on top in a new Mason-Dixon poll of likely primary voters there. Among likely Democratic primary voters, Clinton leads Obama, 26%-21%, with Edwards at 18%, Richardson at 9%, and Biden at 6%; no other Democratic presidential contender gets more than 1%.

Among likely GOP primary voters, Romney leads McCain, 27%-16%, followed by Giuliani at 15%, Fred Thompson at 12%, and Huckabee at 5%.

The Mason-Dixon poll -- which was given exclusively to NBC and MSNBC -- was taken June 4-7, 2007, and the Dem field has a margin of error of +/- 4.9%, and the GOP field has a margin of error of +/- 5.3%.

Hewitt’s incessant shilling for Romney is getting tiresome.

Ask Presidents Buchanan and McCain how critical the contrarian New Hampshire primary vote is...

There are worse people to shill for. I don’t trust Romney that much, but his currently stated focus group-tested parsed positions are pretty good.

So tell me Freepers, which guy is it. I was leaning toward Romney, but haven’t paid that much attention. I trust you guys. Who deserves the nomination and why?

Thompson is my choice but I could live with Romney. Julie Annie and McLame aren’t even a consideration. Duncan Hunter’s great but has 0 chance of winning.

IMHO these guys here will bash Romney no matter what he does. I think they are threatened by him. In their hearts, they know that Romney can beat their “Law and Order” heart throb, Fred Thompson.

These Romney threads are crawling with bashers.

Fred’s the only one (though Hunter is a good guy). If you like your Republicans phony, unprincipled, and disloyal, as some so-called FReepers do, then Romney is your candidate.

Romney or Thompson.

Romney is the consummate executive. The man who has had success turning around pretty much whatever he touches. His job was to essentially take the reigns of flagging corporations, to restructure them, and to set them on the road to profit. He did the same thing in the Olympics. He did the same thing in Massachusetts. Romney’s biggest liability in conservative circles is that he’s changed his stances on abortion. He was once pro-choice and ran as such. However, when in office in Mass, he vetoed all legislation that was pro-abortion and anti-life. He also signed a ban on assault rifles. He has also lived the walk of family values with his own family, having raised 5 kids who have done quite well for themselves and having remained true to his wife, who he met in high school.

Thompson is a folksy speaker, a good, honest man, and fits the mold of the traditional, southern Republican statesman. He speaks directly in a very indirect, unassuming, causal manner. He’s a solid fiscal and social conservative. Perhaps his biggest liability is his health. He has lymphoma in remission (which will return). This is said to be indolent, so perhaps it doesn’t matter. He also looks about 10-15 years beyond his age of 64. But he’s pretty impressive at 6’5” (as I recall). In any case, he has an 85 American Conservative Union voting record, so he’s a strong conservative to modearte conservative Republican.

I’m partial to Romney. I like his ideas regarding our economy, legal and illegal immigration, family, and his oratory skills are unparalleled.

That said, I could live with a Thompson nomination, no questions asked.

"(Fred Thompson) looks about 10-15 years beyond his age of 64."

Give me a break. He doesn't look 80 years old. Dr. Demento and Crazy Johnnie look 80.

Vote for Mike Huckabee. Whenever I hear him talk, he sounds like he “gets it.” As Governor of Arkansas, he gained experience running an enormous organization; unlike his famous predecessor, he did not molest the women of Little Rock. As an ordained Southern Baptist preacher and the former head of the state convention, he nails all the social issues and understands that God created us and endowed us with the certain unalienable right to life from the moment of conception. He also understands the virtues of lower tax rates and the necessity of balanced budgets; he also supports replacing the income tax with a national retail sales tax.

Perhaps most importantly, Huckabee understands the clear and present danger that Islamofascist terrorists here and abroad present to the lives of our citizens and allies. And he speaks on the issue with the firmness in the right that George Bush exhibits. Mike Huckabee can lead us closer to our ultimate victory over the terrorists; he supports the troops and their mission.

Every Democratic candidate diabolically opposes Hucakbee (and most Republicans) on all three essential elements of this worldview.

Desreves? I would rephrase the question - who is the best candidate of those running who has a real chance to defeat Hillary? To me that’s a no brainer - it is Mitt Romney.

Huckabee ? He’s like the Arkansas Romney. Big time squish on illegals and left his state party in the weakest shape its been in in 25 years.
