Spokesman for President Bush Posts on Free Republic About Immigration Bill
Thursday, June 14, 2007 | Kristinn

Posted on 06/14/2007 11:16:52 AM PDT by kristinn

A spokeman for the Bush administration sent an e-mail to Jim Robinson and myself confirming the authenticity of a post on Free Republic this afternoon regarding the immigration bill currently before the Senate as having been posted on behalf of the White House.

The spokesman, Nicholas Thompson, works for the White House Office of Strategic Initiatives. The Politico reported yesterday that Thompson and Kerrie Rushton, associate directors in the Office of Strategic Initiatives who work under Karl Rove, would be engaging the blogosphere on the immigration bill.

Thompson's post is on the thread titled Penalty Mitigation in the Immigration Reform Bill, a vanity posted by philman_36. Thompson posted at comment #53.

Thompson's e-mail to Free Republic included a brief introduction and the text of his posted comment:

Hi,

I just wanted to let you know that I just posted a response to the post "Penalty Mitigation in the Immigration Reform Bill."

The White House appreciates the opportunity to respond on Free Republic.

Response:
I would like to point out that the Secretary is authorized to reduce or mitigate penalities against employers who in good faith are trying to comply with the law. Certainly, we understand that not all employers knowingly hire illegal immigrants; this will remain the case, especially before the bill’s new secure documentation requirements are fully phased in. We do not seek to wrongly penalize honest employers who unknowingly hire illegal immigrants, therefore we reserve the right to reduce or mitigate their penalties if the employer can show good faith compliance in following the law.

For those employers who do knowingly hire illegal immigrants, please know that we intend to penalize these employers strongly, and the Administration has already stepped up these penalties in the last couple of years. For example, a 2005 program, “Operation Rollback,” assessed $15,000,000 in civil fines to employers, an amount greater than the sum of administrative fines collected in the previous eight years and was the largest worksite enforcement penalty in US history. In the first quarter of FY07, criminal and civil forfeitures have totaled $26,700,000 for employers.

As a reminder of what’s in the bill, fines for hiring an illegal worker are $5,000 maximum per illegal worker for the first offense, $10,000 maximum per illegal worker for the second, $25,000 maximum per illegal worker for the third , and $75,000 maximum per illegal worker for the fourth. In addition, the bill increases the maximum criminal penalty for a pattern or practice of unlawful hiring twenty-five-fold, from $3,000 to $75,000, and would impose a prison term of up to six months. This represents a significant increase in fines for employers who knowingly hire illegal immigrants.

Or - go back and starve.

I really understand that the president would not deport people and families back to a place with no home, no food, no job.

But, that is why the borders should be closed first. WE must stop the onslaught or our country will be taken over from within and America will die.

Close the borders PERIOD. Then work out who will be allowed to stay, who will be deported, who is in the country.

Another point - our immigration program will be destroyed because why will people go through normal immigration when they can just come in through the borders same as the Mexicans?

Have you noticed how many Indian physicians are in America? I saw a yellow page directory of only Muslims in Arlington, Texas and the directory was 3/4” wide. I was shocked.

So, I will no longer have as my contacts those with foreign names - I will stick with only Americans for my doctors, lawyers, dentists, etc. The government is not doing its job to protect our families, so we have to do our own protecting.

Oh really? I guess I was not watching the news when a Mexican blew himself up at a major landmark in New York City.

What a ridiculous comment. Right off the bat, a far greater number of Americans have been killed by illegals than have killed by terrorists (drunk driving, gang related violence, etc.). The "Decider" has allowed thousands of foreign nationals to smuggle themselves across our borders each and every week. He continues to maintain a 9/10 attitude towards immigration in a post 9/11 world. Without border security there simply is no Homeland security. Those guys at Fort Dix were simply the tip of the proverbial iceberg.

We won't be balkanized in the way that Yugoslavia was. Already there are signs that most of Americans are starting to accept Mexican culture. But inevitably it will become part of the American Culture. (I'll bookmark this page and refer it to you in 20 years)

But we will become balkanized. What will happen if we don't seriously reform our immigration laws is that the southwest will basically become our "Quebec". Bilingualism will run rampant. Residents and regional politicians will begin talking about having "loyalties" to both societies.

Haha, Republicans played us all for fools. Let Hillary win in 2008, yeah that's the answer. Total domination by the Democrats.

Well, Bush is doing the heavy lifting for Hillary by running roughshod over the direct will of the people who actually put him in office and fractionalizing the GOP.

Hopefully someone from the White House is reading this. The president should:

1) Immediately drop this shamnesty bill.
2) Go on national TV and tell illegals that they have 72 hours to leave the country, taking with them only what they brought. Repeat every paragraph in Spanish if it’s needed.
3)Close the borders after that 72 hour period.
4)Have ships ready to take remaining illegals who have repeatedly invaded somewhere that would make it impossible for them to hop across a border.
5) Then we can talk about a guest worker program, with anyone who has ever come over illegally being ineligible to participate for 5 years.

President Bush took an oath to uphold the Constitution of the United States.

He lost a lot of supporters when he called us racist and bigots because we want the laws of this land enforced. He is the one doing the name calling.

Exactly you just made my point, the foundation of this bill would be based on Bi-partisan support with ammendments that included things that the GOP wants like Border security, No citizenship rights to be granted, Felons to be deported, and illegals only granted guest worker provisions. The legislation is actually a great starting point to fix the problems. Your hold them accountable now stance with existing laws that is what isn’t working, won’t work, can’t work and has absolutely no bi-partisan support. Just think of the logistics involved in finding, accounting and deporting the 12-14 million existing illegals... that is what makes me LOL....

So keep dreaming about enforcing existing laws the squishy middle just isn’t into it and the elite classes want their landscaping and pool cleaners to remain affordable and Latino. So like I said bottom line you either take what you can get now or

Do like so many are and get pissed off at Bush and the GOP and then don’t vote, won’t vote or vote for the opposition... say what you want this is the wedge that broke the GOP in NOV 06 lots of conservatives did stay at home because of this issue. If you do it in 08 you doom the party...

go ahead and read post #606.... Cottonball is one of those confused individuals that actually believes maybe the Liberals will fix immigration better then the Conservatives now that my friend is seriously funny....

IMO, I DO think it's the same Nick. The New America Foundation's "about us" contains this interesting paragraph:

The New America Foundation is a nonprofit, post-partisan, public policy institute that was established through the collaborative work of a diverse and intergenerational group of public intellectuals, civic leaders and business executives. Launched in 1999, the Foundation is guided by its founding President and CEO Ted Halstead, and an outstanding Board of Directors. New America is headquartered in our nation’s capital and also has a significant presence in California, the nation’s largest laboratory of democracy.

"California, the nation's largest laboratory of democracy." busted. Time for dinner.

Please add to your list:

6) NO MORE ANCHOR BABIES. NO MORE AUTOMATIC CITIZENSHIP FOR
BABIES BORN HERE TO ILLEGALS.

If both parents are illegal, then the child born should not be given automatic citizenship.

I haven’t read any further on this thread. Sorry if this suggestion is a repeat! LOL!

Very thoughtful respectful post.

The RNC will not need you or me if this bill goes through.

They are banking on the 25% growth of Mexicans in the country and falling all over themselves trying to get these non-Americans as Americans and for us to pay the bills.

What about our ability to maintain the entitlement programs?

What about the survivability of Medicare, Medicaid, Social Security?

What about raising up a class of people expecting free support for all their needs, no payment of taxes, no need to follow the law and another class of people under a different set of laws that are expected to pay for them to serve as cheaper labor (which is a fallacy because they too will be
earning minimum wage the minute the bill is signed).

How do you make a people, entering a country illegally with special rights to not follow the laws, follow the laws of the land?

And, we all know that the democrats will move to the next step to allow them more and more rights at our expense so that the democrats will have a socialized country dependent on government services more quickly.

Duncan Hunter Today on Lou Dobbs: “Border Security should not be conditioned on amnesty!”

But after true border security and law enforcement, I think most of us are willing to have legislation that causes illegal employers to withdraw their perverse jobs, so illegals aliens can go home in peace -- and then, then, then, I think most of us are willing to have a very, very well measured and managed guest worker program, but only where truly needed and rigidly enforced.

PS: Politicians: Don't you dare call us unAmerican nor racist again.
