A Turning Point in the GOP Race
Real Clear Politics ^ | June 18, 2007 | Peter Brown

The race for the Republican presidential nomination has reached a potential turning point.

The irony is that the fates of the professional politicians who began their campaigns historically early last year may well depend on a reluctant combatant getting into the race about the time candidates would if this were a typical election cycle.

Fred Thompson's impending entry into the race and downticks in Rudy Giuliani's and John McCain's poll numbers will make this a momentous summer, and one in which the focus of attention might switch from the Democratic contest between Sens. Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama, which has dominated the news media coverage until now.

The contest will be easier to win with Hillary, I think. She’ll polarizes and really bring out the base (plus people don’t like her within her own party). Not sure if we’ll get the things with Obama. I think he’d be more a of contest, but I could be mistaken.

Is it possible the mainstream is simply bored with the novelty of Obama and HRC?

I have been surprised at the ability of the American people to veer off from the cliff before. Maybe they'll do so again.

Fred keeps going down in my personal poll. Between his little game of keeping people in suspense and the much more important matters of concern about his true politics, I am much more in favor of Hunter or Tancredo and they CAN win.

It is a year and a half until the election.

McCain's Arizona residence and war-hero background would seemingly put him in greater stead with the GOP faithful. But, his maverick style has alienated many GOP voters who might otherwise see him as the heir to Reagan and the Bushes.

This guy doesn't have a clue. Anyone who believes McCain has a snowball's chance of getting the nomination, Thompson or no Thompson, or who blames McCain's problems on his "maverick style" is obviously a liberal who knows nothing about Republicans.

It is hard to imagine much happening in the summer. Usually dullsville politically.

I suppose it hypothetically possible that Hunter or Tancredo could win SOMETHING, but not the Republican nomination for President. They don't have any realistic chance at all, any more than you or I do.

So, as Thompson "keeps going down" in your personal poll (and who is included? Is this just me, myself and I?), who is really going up? Not Tancredo or Hunter.

Maybe Obama?

You’re right about Hillary. As far as Obama, he’s a light-weight and is not ready for prime time. This will show as the campaign goes along.

Joe Biden, IMO, would be the toughest Dem to beat but I doubt that he will get nomination. The guy makes sense; well, as much sense as Democrat can make.

Guys wakeup, this is all for a Hillary win.

Look Bush Sr. Clinton, Clinton, Bush Jr, Bush Jr.... Hillary is next. It closes the cycle. When you see how chummy Bush Sr is with Clinton, then look at Jr and Clinton, you too will see the Hillary win.

To win this race, you are going to have to cross over to the democrats that don’t want a Hillary win and attract them, then with the missing base you have, you may have a chance.

Another option is to change to the democrat ticket in large numbers and vote against her, but I’d have a better chance of winning the lottery.

Interesting comment from author Dan Simmons on his website:

"[Fred Thompson] does have a gravitas that seems to be missing in the rest of the pack . . . both parties' packs, that is. Try the Gedankenexperiment of asking yourself which of the current 20 candidates or so you can imagine addressing the nation the day after the biological/radiological/chemical attack on Atlanta -- just visualize it and hear their voices, and then tell me that Fred Thompson doesn't seem the right person for the next 4 or 8 years."

The only thing preventing Hunter from winning, are those who choose not to support him.

Do you support giving illegals “aspirations of citizenship”? How does that differ from what Bush or Hillary plan to do?

I support the 60-day amnesty program. We give every person in our country without our permission (i.e. illegally) 60 day to get themselves out back across the border without fear of arrest, prosecution or imprisonment.

Any left in the country after that must be prosecuted to the full extent of the law, including prison terms.

Visualize it and “hear their voices”...what you’ve described is a job for a walk the walk person. Sorry, I cannot see Fred Thompson in that role.

It sounds like a job for a man will REAL military experience...I definitely CAN see a man like Duncan Hunter.

Great idea. So then you don’t support Thompson?

So Ronald Reagan fails your test.

I've yet to see the attraction of Hunter.
