Thompson: I'm The Man For The Times
Times online ^ | June 20, 2007 | Gerard Baker

Posted on 06/20/2007 10:25:02 AM PDT by de meanr

Fred Thompson, the actor and former US senator, has given his strongest indication yet that he is preparing to launch a presidential campaign in the next few weeks.

In an exclusive interview, his first with a non-US news organization, the former lawyer and star of "Law and Order", the US detective show, told The Times that his presidential bid would be based on his belief that Americans wanted change and that he was uniquely placed to provide it.

“I think they perceive the reality and the reality is that perhaps this is the occasion where the man meets the times.”

He said he had the experience for a tough presidential campaign in an already crowded field for the Republican nomination in next year’s presidential election. “As we say where I grew up this ain’t my first rodeo. I’ve seen it up close and personal. I’ve had good friends run for president. I've campaigned for them. I’ve known a few presidents. I understand what the job is about and I wouldn’t run for it if I wasn’t willing to pay the price”.

It’s not the candidates’ fault. If the “debates” were given more than 90 minutes for 10 candidates, and ALL candidates HAD to comment on EACH question, that would be a real debate.

How long did the Lincoln-Douglas debates last? I thought I'd read it was days.

Well at least Thompson supporters should understand other supporters and who they are for. Do you think I am for Rudy???? You are way off line for that. I am for Duncan Hunter!!!! and if we must make a second choice than it is Mitt Romney. Fred is third.

It's getting hard to tell the Fred bashers apart. They all engage in the same mindless and hypocritical attacks that apply to all the other major candidates.

Do you honestly think that a lot of major Bush Admin and Bush campaign players and Bush fundraisers are not actively part of Romney's campaign? Yet you have no problem supporting Mitt as a backup candidate.

Yet some wonder why Fred has avoided the debates to date when he had half of H&C all to himself after the most recent debate. Duh.

The forum being used is unfair, because the power to direct a question belongs to the moderator, and is thus ultimately uninformative.

And you make yet ANOTHER point why Fred has been smart to follow the path he has taken to date. He doesn't get to speak only when Wolfie lets him.

Problem is only 57,000 people saw that clip as of yesterday. Not near enough to get elected.

I saw it on TV. How can that be measured?

Thompson in London

I've posted this on a couple of Fred-threads now, and the silence has been deafening. The videos, in my opinion, clearly reveal someone who is NOT ready for prime time. The shuffling of notes, the looking down, the hemming and "uh"s and "um"s make for painful viewing.

The gap between Fred's hype and actual reality will close as we see more of him at events such as this. I defy anyone to watch video #1 and find anything impressive about the performance.

One thing I don’t understand is why it is still early in thre race for Hunter, but it’s getting to be too late for Thompson.

>How did he rise so much in the polls, if he’s not playing?

His Law and Order fans? His movie fans?

By playing I mean being a bona fide candidate with the rest of them, and not unfairly accepting constant tv freebies.

He is a hynotist, don’t you know? He’s using his powers to brainwash all of us, and then he’s going to take over the world.

All the others are running around like headless chickens while Fred calmly takes the lead. Its a sight to behold......

I’m waiting to make up my mind about Fred until he lets us know how he stands on illegal immigration and the SPP. I’m of the “Fool me once, shame on you. Fool me twice, shame on me.” school of thought. I was thouroughly fooled by bush, as were we all.

Gawd, grow up. Unfairly accepting constant tv freebies? THAT IS HOW YOU WIN - OUTFOX THE OTHER CANDIDATES.

This is politics, not beanbag, as the saying goes. Fred has outsmarted the rest of the pack at every turn - including Hunter. Hunter had a great chance to harness grassroots support and alternative media but blew it. Old guy Fred has the best grasp of that concept. Maybe you find that unfair. P>Oh, and Hunter DOES get a lot of face time on TV talk shows, from posts I have seen here. Is that unfair?

I have no idea. I was answering another post on that particular statement. The problem I have with Thompson supporters (and eventually I will be one if he is the candidate) is that they are as bad as Guilani supporters. You cannot debate them. If you say anything negative even in discussion they totally disregard what is being said instead of having a healthy discussion which in the long run could change positions for some. Guilani situation was the complete opposite because people were telling them how liberal he was and the supporters just bashed them....Thompson supporters are hearing some negative stuff and are bashing the posters instead of having a discussion which is what FR is all about. Everyone here (especially since the purge) is on the same side as far as wanting more conservative candidates....we just differ on which one is best for America. Duncan Hunter I must say IMHO is the most conservative of the three. Sorry if that makes you angry but it shouldn’t really. It is just an opinion.

I don’t think that way. I think a few here have mentioned that but I don’t think that is the opinion of most.

If Duncan Hunter is not the next president of the United States, I fear there will no longer be a United States. You heard it here first.

“Do not take counsel of your fears.” General George S. Patton

Honestly, Paperdoll, I sympathize with the stress you must feel, believing that only that one man can save the nation. It must weigh heavily on you.

But while you may believe Hunter best qualified, that does not mean that others are qualified to prevent the demise of the Republic. Nor does it mean that even Hunter is guaranteed to avoid a demise.

Hunter would never accept your premise that he and only he can save the Republic.

But really, if you have one main issue of concern (immigration?), you need to keep an open and hopeful mind that perhaps someone else with a realist chance of winning the nomination and the White House might indeed be out there.

I think you will find that he really is out there, and that there is real hope.

But don’t stop rooting for Hunter, just open up to the possible good news of a suitable alternative.

Hey, Thompson is smart enough to know that he can pick and choose his TV shows because he is not a candidate. There is nothing "unfair" about it. (FWIW, "Unfair" is the favorite adjective of Liberals.).

The other "candidates" were all too stupid to realize that getting in early is not a smart idea. I'd like to know that the president is smart. Thompson is smart. I like that in a candidate.

>Fred is just the “Big Man on Campus” right now.......They are acting like teenagers getting to drive for the first time. Well after a while it gets routine and mundane and boring.<

Fred is covered by the glowing dust of the silver screen, and grown men and women are swooning! That in itself is not only alarming, but deadly IMO.

You and I know that I would have said they are acting like teenagers on their first drunk. :o)

>>Fred Thompson is not the candidate that should be chosen in my opinion.

It would be helpful if you explained who you blieve is better, and why.

>>As some in the other thread mentioned, Fred has many Bush Administration personnel on his team...

Since each is an individual who may or may not support certain Bush policies you object to, wouldn’t it be fairer to address each one as an individual?

And doesn’t every campaign with a competent staff include people with Bush connections? How many active Republican political professionals have no connection to Bush? And are the ones Bush never hired superior to those he did?

I was thouroughly fooled by bush, as were we all.

I wasn't. I voted against Gore and Kerry. I have never been a Bush fan, though he does do some good things, like veto the stem cell bill, and seemingly, go hard on terror. His very lax border attitude though makes it increasingly more difficult for me to believe in the latter.

I am a Fred fan though because both my gut and my mind tell me he is the real deal and very electable, even though there are some blotches in his record that concern me.
