(CBS 42) AUSTIN Austin police are looking for a group of men they say were involved in a mob beating that killed a man.
Police say David Rivas Morales, 40, died after as many as 20 men beat him outside the Booker T. Washington apartment complex (map).
Detectives say the crime was unlike anything they have ever seen, a flagrant act of mob violence, that happened just outside his sister's front door.
Margaret Morales can't understand why a mob would beat her brother dead.
“He was just the kind of person who would help anybody out if they needed help,” Margaret Morales said. “He would help them before himself.”
Police are describing Morales as a Good Samaritan who was riding in a car that accidentally struck a child. He was trying to stop an angry mob from hurting the driver and ended up getting killed by the crowd.
“I'd say about 25 to 30 people were jumping on this guy, hitting him everywhere, kicking, stomping on him,” Marcus Morris said.
Morris was using a payphone just a few feet away and saw it all.
“It looked like a mad house, honestly,” Morris said. “I can't believe it got so out of control. It started maybe with one or two guys and it seemed like people were jumping out of thin air. I mean, they were coming from everywhere.”
Police are still trying to figure out the numbers.
“If you think about it logistically, you can only get so many people around one person,” Cmdr. Harold Piatt said. “So there could have been anywhere from 6 to 20 people actually involved in the physical confrontation.”
It is a violent image Margaret Morales can't forget.
“I'll live with that memory for the rest of my life,” Margaret said. “Knowing I saw him lying there and couldn't do anything.”
Detectives admit this will be a complicated crime to solve. As many as 3,000 people were in the area last night for the Juneteenth celebrations and they're holding onto hope witnesses will come forward.

The media is no gonna cover this, no way. That might force them to ask some questions about black culture...like why is violence so accepted?

Not to be personally insulting, but that’s a really ignorant statement.
I wondered how long it would take before someone tried to inject illegal immigration into this thread. The victim’s immigration status is irrelevant.
Juneteenth is a black celebration. Period. Juneteenth (the 19th of June) was the date in 1865 when Texas slaves got news, through the port of Galveston, about the Emancipation Proclamation, which had been signed 2 years earlier. News traveled slower in those days. It’s an old holiday. Blacks in Texas have celebrated it for many, many years. Only recently has it been somewhat recognized in other parts of the country.
Hispanics are not, and never have been a part of Juneteenth, although Hispanics are, and always have been, a part of Texas. Mexican Texicans fought with the anglo settlers to win our collective independence in 1836. My school district has a new high school named for Juan Sequin, hero of the Texas Revolution (others include Sam Houston, Mirabeau B. Lamar, etc.).
The bigger problem here — and it’s an old problem, too — is the animosity between racial groups. Blacks resent Hispanics, and neither of them like Asians. The racial brouhahas in Dallas city and school government are often black-hispanic.
I don’t know anything about the victim or the driver in this case, but it’s easy to assume that he was an ordinary hispanic Texan who was in the wrong place at the wrong time and encountered some beastly fellow-humans, whom I hope get caught.
He also should have known to steer clear of a Juneteenth celebration.
Just dont go out unless armed and you are will to advoid supected trouble areas.
It is a shame that almost every event that is black oriented ends with killings. The local radio stations here used to have a party every Sunday night until the police got overwhelmed by the shootings, beatings and what not. and the funny part is that it NEVER made the news.
If you want to know what is really going on in your city, get a Police Scanner and tune into the police. I hear things that happen that nobody ever reports.

One can see a direct relationship between the ease of illegally crossing our border, illegally voting and granting the vote to folks incapable of self support — and the decline our our society...
Where in hell do our “leaders” and “elites” think they can run to to enjoy the fruits of their PC insanity once the savages turn out the lights in our “city on the hill”??
