WASHINGTON U.S. Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchison of Texas, who has been under intense pressure from the White House and Republican leadership to support a sweeping immigration overhaul, nevertheless announced today that she will vote against reviving the legislation when it returns to the Senate floor next week.
She was joined today by the state's other senator, Republican John Cornyn, who had been expected by the bill's supporters to take such a stance. They had aggressively lobbied Hutchison in hopes of adding her vote to the 60 necessary to revive the stalled legislation.
"I could not support (bringing the bill to a vote) in its present position," Hutchison, criticizing the legislation as amnesty for illegal immigrants, said today.
As No. 4 in the Senate GOP leadership, Hutchison is the highest-ranking Republican to break from her party on a domestic policy issue of signal importance to President Bush.

Thank God someone’s feeling the heat in DC.
Nothing to see here! All good Republicans support amnesty. Only the fringes want border security.
Rumor...Bush has angrily dispatched Gonzales and Andrew Card to Hutchison’s bedside and demand she sign a paper saying she will vote “yes” ...Rumor
Excellent news! Simply superb.
The senators from GA and KBH are hearing from conservatives across the country. If only morons like Kyy and McConnell learned some lessons.
Of course, there is no point in trying to convince the LaRaza wing of the Republican Party (Bush, Lott, Martinez, Corker, and Alexander among others).
>> Hutchison to defy GOP
Huh?
She’s not defying the GOP. The (putative) GOP is defying her (and her constituents)!
If it’s true, she’s been taking our calls and emails seriously. Go Kay!
Note that in the "Grand Compromise" this doesn't bother Teddy Kennedy or Harry Reid at all ~ they love their Nazi brothers eh!
Believe that's Paragraph 902
Just working to kill all the students in Tennessee he can!
Unlike Bush, Kay actually has money, and doesn’t need handouts from the Chamber of Commerce, Mexicans or Saudis to pay her way after she leaves office. Therefore she can represent her constituents honestly. Bush has no integrity left. It is despicable to behold.
To me, Lott has been the most offensive and pig headed. I am laughing my butt off over his whining that his phone banks have been flooded for the past 3 weeks.
If you’re suggesting Pres. Bush has to take handouts from the Saudis or Mexicans in order to be able to buy ribs for his post-presidency barbeques, I think you’re wrong.
She’s not defying the GOP; she’s defying the RNC. There’s a difference.
I think we’ve won.
Thank you Kay.
Given the fact that the Saudis are wahabbis, they might not be interested in contributing to Bush’s bar-b-q, especially if pork is involved.
They might throw in a few mil. if Bush removes pork from the menu though.
LOL! Nice, but I meant that Pres. Bush probably has enough money to get by on without getting any money from the Saudis and Mexicans.
When politicians get concerned about reelection they react. I congratulate all Texans for putting the heat on her.
I read this headline and I swear to you, I wasn’t sure if that meant she was FOR or AGAINST it. That’s how frickin’ screwed up the Republicans are right now. I’ve lost sight of just what they are fighting for or against or will do or won’t do to the point that my eyes are no longer needed. Gouge them out, cut off my ears, and cut out my tongue. It’s the only way to remain Republican now days.
He was a weak, ineffectual leader when he was majority leader. I don't think he should have been forced out of the leadership for his comments, well, maybe, depends, but I was glad when he was forced out of the leadership because leadership should be for leaders.
