Republicans themselves brought on the whipping they suffered in the 2006 elections, Colorado state GOP chairman Dick Wadahms said in appearances in Montana.

Did anyone hear Sen. Voinovich on Hannity a little while ago? Couldn’t or wouldn’t give straight answers to questions, cried like a chick about Sean being mean, and bailed when Sean turned up a little heat. Cowardly arrogant nitwit.
Voinovich had no clue. He didn’t know the go-home-first amendment had gone down in flames. Hannity knew more about what was going on with the bill than he did, and then he got huffy! What a shmuck, and what a performance.
“The public has turned away from the war.” I don’t disagree with you, but I always wonder why the public hasn’t turned away from the missions in Korea and Western Europe as well. They are enormously expensive. Why are we will paying for all that, while our homeland is being invaded to the tune of 20 million illegal aliens? What about the “provide for the common defense” part? We are defending everywhere else in the world but here at home.
I heard it and he sounds like another vote to bring back the fairness doctorine. Wow. Never in my lifetime did I think I would be worried about the things of today. Free Speech, Border enforcement, Saying the pledge....the list is endless sadly. Today I do not feel positive about our country. A bad day indeed.
Might have something to do with the idea that Korean and European civilians don’t shoot at us. Maybe I’m just making a wild guess here. My personal opinion is, we gave the Iraqis freedom, we to a degree destabilized region. This after a long divorce from a dictator we once supported. We gave them their freedom, and what the hell did they do with it?
My personal opinion is that most Americans view the Iraqi people as a bunch of ingrates, and I honestly can’t disagree with them at this point. The Iraqi people have not done a damn thing to show they deserve their freedom or that they deserve their country. They’re not out in the streets risking life and limb for their country against the extremists, farthest from it, it’s all a rush for power and we’re stuck in the middle of it.

This attitude is common with many GOPers I’ve talked to. It may be true but it did not help that state Republicans were spending like Democrats for years and ignoring their supposed principles of fiscal restraint. Nor have we pushed the distinction between parties very well. The progressive Democrats galvanized voters much better and developed momentum that Republicans simply did not have.
And probably the biggest deficiency we had was the lack of good leadership, which is what Wadhams is working to turn around. There certainly is hope voters will see Democrats acting like Democrats to create a statewide backlash.

The dems that I come across are pleased with the new higher taxes that will be payable in 2008 and do not mind that they were denied a vote on TABOR. They are waiting for a big school check from the state while discounting the possibility that the state could actually reduce the state contributions to their local school.
They like mass transit for everyone else so that they can continue to drive their hemi suv’s on open roads.
You are partially correct. Allen bears most of the blame.
But the fact remains that, as good as he may have been elsewhere, Wadhams didn't help. He was in charge of the campaign, in charge of the message.
Wadhams was the one that gave the press a different answer about "macaca" before talking it over with the Senator. He was the one who sent the Senator on an apology tour. He was the one who didn't have any opposition research beyond "Webb hates women" and "Webb writes porno."
Allen's not blameless. But Wadhams didn't know Allen, and didn't know Virginia. I still contend a large part of the problem was that long time Allen staff wasn't there (another issue, another thread, another day).
Whatever the reasons, the George Allen we saw last year, particularly in the fall, was not the George Allen we'd seen on the campaign trail for the last 20 years.
Wadhams reputation would have lead us to believe he was better at damage control.
He wasn't.
As I recall, Wadhams also got into some absolutely juvenile exchanges with Webb’s campaign via press releases and the internet. It was embarassing to put it mildly.
Wadhams was a horrible manager who didn’t understand Virginia. Those lame attacks on Webb’s fiction late in the campaign? Wadhams was planning those pre-Macaca — I was on a conference call with him last July where he was talking about that stuff. Stupid, stupid, stupid.
