Poll: [Fred] Thompson A Factor In GOP Race
CBS News ^ | June 29, 2007

Posted on 06/29/2007 6:45:39 PM PDT by 2ndDivisionVet

Fred Thompson still hasn't officially entered the race for the Republican presidential nomination, but he's already a strong contender.

Thompson, the "Law & Order" actor and former Tennessee senator, is tied with Arizona Sen. John McCain for second place, behind former New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani, in the latest CBS News poll.

With Thompson in the mix, Giuliani leads among Republican primary voters with 34 percent. He's followed by Thompson and McCain, at 22 percent and 21 percent, respectively; and former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney at 6 percent.

Without Thompson in the field, Giuliani jumps up to 42 percent, trailed by McCain at 26 percent and Romney at 8 percent.

IF THESE WERE THE CANDIDATES, WHO WOULD YOU WANT AS REPUBLICAN NOMINEE? (Among Republican Primary Voters)

Giuliani 34 percent

McCain 21 percent

Romney 6 percent

Thompson 22 percent

Someone else/none 7 percent

On the Democratic side, New York Sen. Hillary Clinton maintains her lead in a three-way race over Illinois Sen. Barack Obama and former North Carolina Sen. John Edwards.

Forty-eight percent of Democratic primary voters say they'd like to see Clinton as the party's nominee, followed by 24 percent for Obama and 11 percent for Edwards

As in previous polls, Democratic voters are more satisfied with their party's candidates than Republicans are.

IF THESE WERE THE CANDIDATES, WHO WOULD YOU WANT AS DEMOCRATIC NOMINEE? (Among Democratic Primary Voters)

Clinton 48 percent

Obama 24 percent

Edwards 11 percent

Only 30 percent of Republicans say they're satisfied with their choices — the lowest number ever. Sixty-one percent of GOP primary voters want more choices.

Conversely, 61 percent of Democrats are satisfied with their candidates, while just 35 percent want more choices.

A majority of Americans, 53 percent, would like a third party to compete with Democrats and Republicans; 41 percent disagree.

But as of now, most don't know much about New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg, whose recent decision to drop out of the Republican Party fueled speculation that he's considering an independent run for the White House.

Where did they conduct this poll anyway, the numbers I’ve seen showed Thompson ahead of Rudi.

I’m for Fred, but these numbers are absolutely insane. Giuliani with a big lead? Mitt Romney with single digits? McCain way ahead of Romney?

They must have gone into a New York bar and polled the first 13 people they saw.

The reporter was probably Jayson Blair, assisted by “special consultant” Dan Rather.

Just goes to show Democrats have no morals. They don’t care who they get as long as there is a D after their name. Republicans expect more from their candidate.

They want him now. They think he unite the many wing of the GOP.

He has to explain not only to Republicans (he has to unite all of the various wings), but also to Independents and Reagan Democrats why he wants to be President and why he needs to President now or it’s going to be 1968 all over again and this time it’s going to be Algore, or Hildabeast, instead of Nixon.

When the voters who care start to hear of Giuliani’s liberal history on so many issues, I don’t see how he can survive the primaries. Thompson will run past him like he is stuck in cement.

"they know he can beat the commie with fat legs."

You said Commie with fat legs and thought of a Rosie.

Or maybe you were thinking of a Lebanese.

“GOP voters want Fred.”

Independents and Democrats want Fred as well, which is why the Democratic Party just started attacking Fred, despite ignoring all the other Republican candidates until now.

there is 7 months until the Iowa primary, Fred still hasn’t announced as of yet, Fred mentioned that when the race first started, he was told he needed 100 million dollars to run, and that be waiting until now, he saved 50 million dollars and he still is running a strong 22%.

I like Ron Paul (and strangely Mitt Romney!), I have no doubt about his big “C” conservatism, however, I doubt he will make it very far so Fred it is, it should be pop some popcorn time when Fred and Rudy go at each other

I really like Thompson. I like Hunter too. Rudy and McCain should have the hammer/sickle tatooed on their buttocks.

Yes, this poll is believeable. LOL

Does CBS ever wonder what it would be like to run a legit poll for once?

I can understand Giuliani being in the lead in this poll but there’s now friggin way that McCain is ahead of Romney, so I’m calling BS on this poll.

She was *****ing and moaning about Fred’s split vote for impeachment.

I used to like her. She’s jumped the shark in the last year or two, though.
