My fear is that Chocolate is next.

Your fear is well founded, my dear. I'm getting so tired of repeated "we told you so" to people that suppoert this kind of crapola. They don't seem to understand they WILL be next.

Orrin Hatch also supports this.

Given what happened last November, I hate the thought of throwing away my vote but republicans are killing me via the "death by a thousand cuts".

Democraps are separated from Repubs only in their extremist attitudes and only thru a major shakeup via the electorate will the repubs be taught their lesson. The libertarian party isn't the answer but they definitely are the medicine necessary for what is ailing the GOP.........

A wake up call to the Repubs in '08 is inevitable considering they only hit the "snooze" button last November.......

Here's a letter I sent to Senator Crapo earlier this year on this very subject:

Chairman's letter to Senator Crapo concerning raising the tobacco tax

May 8, 2007

The Honorable Mike Crapo
Committee on Finance
United States Senate
Washington DC 20510

Dear Senator Crapo:

On behalf of Idahoans for Tax Reform, I’m writing to encourage your strong opposition to an increase in the federal excise tax on tobacco products. An increase in the cigarette tax from $0.39 to $1.00 is the wrong way to go, politically, economically, and morally.

As you know, this tax falls disproportionately on those who can least afford it – those making less than $40,000.00 per year. Our Members of Congress should be working to reduce the tax burden on hard-working Idahoans, not to increase it.

And, increasing this tax is just plain bad policy – the equivalent of building a house on a foundation of sand. It is hypocritical and shortsighted for these erstwhile “social engineers” to make the budget for programs such as the State Children’s Health Insurance Program dependent on revenue from legal practices that they at the same time claim to want to discourage.

Please oppose any efforts to increase the federal excise tax on cigarettes. This increase is unwelcome, unsustainable, and unnecessary. If additional revenue is needed, I’m sure there’s something somewhere that can be cut in a nearly three trillion-dollar budget.

Respectfully,

Growing your own sounds like a good idea to me, because I am sure the tobacco companies add more addictive ingredients into their product to make it more difficult to quit smoking.

what’s that famous expression? “I didn’t leave the party, the party left me.”

There is no party identification with voter registration in Virginia, but I did back out of my membership in the VA and County GOP some time back. I had been a member and officer of both my district and county GOP for years when I lived in Delaware.

I make mine, at most they cost me $8.00 a cartion, but generally about $6.00. All it takes is an hour while watching TV to make a carton.

It has entered mine more than once. Where would you go?

Give me the math on the $8.00 a carton. Don’t forget about the shipping.

Is there anything the government can do that is so repulsive that even when prefaced with, "it's for the children," that would cause people to reject the politicians' proposal"

It seems these days that everything is for the children. Is there anything that isn't for the children?

Apparently neither politician, pundit or reporter could persuade the people that the shamnesty immigration bill was for the children.

There is no doubt the manufacturers put all kinds of additives in cigarettes. However, they are primarily for flavor and to keep them burning. I do not buy into the addictiveness claim.

Sadly, leaving the GOP is even starting to enter my mind.

I know how you feel. It doesn't seem so long ago that I was actually proud to be a Republican.

I feel like a mother whose favorite child has been convicted of a heinous crime.

We just have to keep fighting and electing people who really do care about freedom and smaller government. Just wait until they start taxing things that they think cause obesity — they’ll be some screaming then — it’s right down the road, I’d be willing to wager.

I was going to un-enroll in the Republican party soon; now I have a genuine sense of urgency.

Me too! The GOP doesn't stand a chance in 2008. They have sold out America. I'm fed up.

"I can remember when one could buy a pack of cigarettes for less than this one tax increase..." Not inflation adjusted. They were cheaper though. Going waay back, dad said they were a nickle a pack from "ships stores" in the Navy during WWII, this was probably less than half the going rate for civilians or something like that.
