Kate Bush.
In the mid 80's I was attending many large college house parties. I remember several times when, during the din of a loud party, I had the sensation of being annoyed by something. Upon further analysis, some fingernail-on-chalkboard Prince number was blasting and fouling the environment. No discernable melody. Inconsistent and unpleasant rhythm. No real voice, other than some sort of a squeaky unoiled hamster wheel sort of sound. Indescribably monotonous.
It's like a joke the whole world has been playing on me for twenty years. You all seriously consider the guy a musician? Really?
Okay I'll bite... Who would you say is a good musician? What songs should other people listen to in your advice?
Compared to prince, some guy playing accordion in a polka band on weekends that never really mastered the thing and needs to be covered up by other guys in the band. If I had to rank all musical acts I've ever heard anywhere, including school band concerts, he'd be buried deeply in the bottom 1%. It's like his prime objective is to create ear-splitingly awful sound. Then, millions of people, who's musical tastes I will often agree with, inexplicably seem to enjoy being exposed to it. Like I say, it's all a big mystery to me.
An astonishingly talented musician. Prince remains a prodigy.
but you didnt name anyone...
name someone
I agree. I really like his old-school work ethic. He busts his hump James Brown-style to please his fans and put on a perfect show every time. He's a workaholic and a perfectionist, which I appreciate. He kicked butt at the Super Bowl in the pouring rain. He kicked butt on Saturday Night Live recently, bucking the trend of slouchy performances there. Plus, he can wail on guitar.
good questions. crappy answer that followed, though. ;)
Yeah, too bad he's not squeaky clean with high morals like Motley Crue, Poison, Nirvana, AC/DC and all the other rock and country stars FReepers usually salivate over.
Prince is one of my favorites too. I remember growing up and the great debate was "Prince or Michael Jackson?" Hands down, it's Prince.
Suppose if I claim that Prince is a good actor, then others can say what a lousy musician he is...
I prefer instrumentals myself.
I guess I'm somewhere between you and the others.
Great talent, great waste. So far.
It's a story, so it gets printed.
I dug Kate Bush...thought she was hot ina weird way. Dug that “Running up that Hill” song a lot
The article doesn’t say- William or Harry?
I remember before the Superbowl there was all the typical blather here about how freaky he is etc. Yada yada yada...
Then he comes on and gives one of the most truly musical, blistering performances in years. Alot of people gained a new respect for him then.
I’ve been a fan, but not a fanatic, since well before Purple Rain. He has alot of off the wall stuff, but musically, he has moments of sheer brilliance. Doesn’t he have a doctorate in music? I forget.
I have a fried, very talented musically, whom I consider to have a gift for music. PLays several instruments, fascinated with music in general. He puts Prince up there with Bach in terms of raw ability, compositional sense, etc.
He always puts in 110% at his shows.
Seen him 5 times. He even pointed me out in the crowd at a show in Vegas once. I was wearing an Elvis costume...but that’s another story. Whatta night....
Prince at Madison Square Garden is about as rocking as it gets. I know many who have seen him at tiny private clubs.
The analogy with James Brown is very apt.
interesting
