I use these places for oil changes, but my automatic response when they try to upsell me is “thanks - I’ll replace it myself”.

I used to go to these quick oil change places all the time. I've never had them tell me there was something wrong with my car. They did frequently try to get me to replace the oil filter.

My dealership will do an oil change for nearly the same price, so I go there now.

I don’t typically stand and watch the service in progress but I will check the parts afterwards - though I did once live in a small town and the mechanic there did let me watch and he taught me alot.

They’re will be fuel dumping out if they change it. That’s how you’ll know if your watching them.
I use valvoline rapid oil change and they’re very professional. The one I go to actually opens a case of oil and dumps the quarts in manually instead of using the little pump from the barrel.

I always check to make sure the work was done, and ask for the old parts where applicable.

They still try to scam you. Another one of these sting operations revealed that they would give the customer whatever random parts happened to be laying around in the shop.

If you DON’T change the filter every time you change the oil, there’s little point in changing the oil, as the filter holds all the crap that the oil has picked up during its use, and you’re basically just holding a quart of FILTHY oil in the system, negating the clean oil you just bought.

It’s like keeping 1/4 of last night’s dishwater to wash tonight’s dishes.

So what is to stop them from giving you someone ELSE’S old parts?

Because I know what my old parts look like and what new parts look like...duh... It doesn't matter to me nowadays, because all my vehicles are under warranty and I just take them to the dealer. It's a good dealer, too. Had one car with a bad lifter noise after only 25K miles, and they replaced the whole engine under warranty...over $5000 worth of work for free. I won't take my cars anywhere else. I even do the oil changes at the dealer. One time, a mechanic at the dealer scratched up some CDs I had in the car, and the dealership cut me a check for replacement CDs with no hassle. I love my Toyota dealer.

If you DON’T change the filter every time you change the oil, there’s little point in changing the oil,

That simply isn't true. The contaminants are captured in the filter and stay there unless the filter fails. I myself use $12 K&N oil filters and generally change them on every second oil change. The oil doesn't look dark even after 5,000 miles. The cheap filters I wouldn't trust for even one oil change; the chance of an internal tear is too high.

It’s like keeping 1/4 of last night’s dishwater to wash tonight’s dishes.

That's a false analogy because the contaminants don't circulate through the system. I periodically send an oil sample to an analysis service and it always looks good.

Pull your dipstick before and after an oil change. It should change from near black to medium-honey-brown.

Of course, you must be correct. I have a mere 30 years as a mechanic and engineer.

The acids and other soluble contaminants do NOT stay in the filter, but continue circulating.

Oh, and if the filter is clogged by the debris it has filtered out, NOTHING gets filtered, because the bypass opens and allows everything to flow unfiltered.

You may prefer to change your filter every other time, and that’s your prerogative. I’ll change mine when I change the oil, and recommend others do the same. YMMV.
