240 bucks?! Whoa!
I hope so, this story is over a year old.
But I understand it is an ongoing problem and not just with Jiffy-lube.
Don’t forget NBC’s record of integrity on these kinds of things. I seem to remember something about en exploding fuel tank...
Other minor repairs I do myself.
Here’s another one I just thought of.....my neighbor 2 doors down had a new garage door put in. We all have the same door. He paid $1325.00. So, last week I had my estimate done. $1,550.00. After he told me that I said “How come my neighbor that you just did, only costs $1,325.00?” He told me “Our prices went up”. Uh huh.
"But, we were just saving you some money by replacing just the element. If you want us to also replace the fuel filter casing, that will be another $456.78."
How did I end up on this thread??? WHere am I? Are you trying to take advantage of me??? ;)
I was thinking that same thing. But then again the MSM types aren't known for their intelligence.
Now if it's an "in-line filter" then I could see the whole thing being replaced, but the in tank types are usually a replaceable element. Some are even a fine wire mesh that can just be cleaned.
Ever watch someone from Jiffy? They drain the oil, and within seconds screw the drain plug back in, leaving almost another 1/4 of a quart of dirty oil still in the engine, that would have otherwise slowly drained out if they'd left the drain plug out, and allowed it to drain.
If you like your engine, leave the drain plug off for at least 20 minutes and let it drain out.
So what is to stop them from giving you someone ELSE’S old parts?
But...they’re always so friendly. Like when I was there last time they let me know my coolent was low and offered to top it off for just $20.
Years ago I was working some long hours, and for several years I got too lazy to do my own oil and lubes.
One of these places over-filled the oil by a quart. If I hadn't bothered to check, it could have ruined my engine. And almost all of them missed several grease fittings, which ain't too good for your front end.
Better to do it yourself, if you are able.
we stopped using the quicklube places - the first one became irate when i demanded that they not replace perfectly good antifreezw and air filters.
Then they stopped greasing my ball joints which i replaced myself and discovered the absence of lube.
then we tried jiffy and lo and behold the same crap -
PEOPLE - if you can see light thru the air filter, it is still OK.
I’ve never noticed that. In fact, the place I go to (not a “Jiffy Lube”) usually does the drain plug right away and then leaves it to drain while doing other things like grease joints and oil filter leave putting the plug back in til the end right before adding oil.
In my state you have to bring your car in every two years for emission testing. If your car is more than ten years old, they will try to make you a mark. They put your car on the dyno and open up the hood and check your front-end first. A few minutes later the mechanic will come back to you and say they cannot do the test because of safety concerns. They tell you that the front end control arms need to be replaced. The estimate is usually over three hundred dollars. I tell them to give me back my car and I will take it somewhere else. I also tell them I will never bring my car back here again for any work.(over 15 years I had over 1500 dollars worth of exhaust work done on various vehicles)They knew I was a regular customer. You have to go another garage on the state emission garage list until you find one that will do the testing without a scam. This time it took me 4 different garages before I got them to do a scam free test. The garage that did the testing expressed shock that the 15 year old vehicle passed. I had to pay an extra 16 dollars for a new gas cap.
My son did a job today where he actually gave the guy a part at cost, and the labor free because he knew the guy couldn’t afford it. There are a lot of really honest people out there, though they don’t get credit.
He does get infuriated by the “12.95” oil change bit. He says the only reason they charge that is to get the people in and find something big to charge them for.
The other thing that makes him crazy is people who don’t change their oil or stuff like timing belts and then come in and cry when they wreck their car.
Another favorite scam at these places is to test your battery and pronounce it “bad” - I had one of those that failed - a year and a half after they tried to tell me it needed replacing.
I use these places for oil changes, but my automatic response when they try to upsell me is “thanks - I’ll replace it myself”.
They tried to sell me a new rad cap (the existing one was 4 months old), new coolant (also 4 months old), fluid changes in my tranny and differential (2 years old), and told me that I had the wrong fluid in my power steering pump. I laughed at the flunkie and told him that if the wrong fluid was in the PS pump, he had better get ahold of FORD and tell their engineers that he knows better than they!
When all was said and done, my $20. quickie oil change cost me 3/4 of an hour, $50, and the twit stripped out my oil drain plug’s threads, which cost me 2 hours one Sunday afternoon to repair.
I doubt that I’ll be using any of these lube places again. My time is more valuable than that.
They paid $240 at Jiffy Lube ?
That right there should be enough to set off alarm bells.
