Forrest's soldiers loved him. His fellow generals admired him. His enemies were terrified at the mere mention of his name. Gen. Robert E. Lee said of his finest subordinate commanders, the most remarkable was one he "had never met" — Forrest. And U.S. and foreign military officers alike have studied Forrest’s campaigns over the decades since the end of the war. It has even been speculated that some aspects of the German Blitzkrieg were patterned after some of Forrest's operations.

"But where you gonna find someone like Gen. Forrest? Never been anyone like him before or after. Gen. Patton comes closest... (IMHO)"

You should read "Robert The Bruce, King of Scots", by Ronald McNair Scott.

thank you sir

this thread spurred me to buy some more Forrest books...I’m now reading the memoirs of his Escort and Staff by the professor from Motlow State (that’s founded by the Jack Daniels family for yall outside Tennessee).

the writer is refreshing

never realized how large Bedford’s “colored” contingent was and not just support troops

he actually offered freedom to those from his own farms who joined him

never gonna hear that from the Neo yankees here

I’ve read John Allan Wyeth’s “That Devil Forrest”. I’ll have to look for the book you mentioned. Any others you could recommend?

I cheat. Since I live so close to Carnton-McGavock cemetary and Stones River National Battlefield, I go to their book stores where they have quite a few. The Wyeth book is the gold standard. I have read Hurst's too....a little more modern but taken from Wyeth. the "Nathan Bedford Forrest's Escort and Staff" by Michael Bradley that I mentioned before is one. and "As They Saw Forrest" by Selph Henry is another. both are good works recounted by those who were there.

in other words, you're continuing to post to me ONLY because NOBODY else will respond to your LIES, hatefulness & ARROGANT stupidity??? (instead they make jokes about "bubba, the FOOL, idiot & LIAR", "behind your back".)

NOTHING you post on FR, since your return from being "permanently banned" for being a BIGOT & "general all around PITA", is taken seriously by ANYONE (with the POSSIBLE exception of "x", the nitwit, who believes ANYTHING if it's posted on the "worldwidewierd".).

laughing AT you.

There is one redeeming factor to General Forrest. He knew when the war was over unlike a lot of Freepers.

You must be referring to those FReepers who support banning the Confederate flag. The ones who condemn those who want to honor their ancestors. Those who would ban all things confederate... you know, it typical Hugo Chavez fashion. They must be the ones you are referring to. They are the ones in lock step with the Chris Dodds, the Ted Kennedys and the Chuckie Schumers on this issue. If you don't like it, ban it.

Both sides should have a massive memory loss.

I’m not a Texan, Southener or Northerner. I’m an American.

So are we. There is absolutely nothing wrong about honoring your ancestors, but there is everything wrong with trying to squash it.

If a man is from Texas, he'll tell you soon enough.
If he's not, why embarrass him?

A book published this year entitled “Nathan Bedford Forrest: In Search of the Enigma” by Davidson and Foxx is a well-written history, though admittedly partisan to Forrest.
