Rasmussen: 2008 Republican Presidential Primary [Fred 26%, Giul 21%, Romn 12%, McCain 11%]
Rasmussen Reports ^ | 7/23/07 | Rasmussen

On the surface, the race for the Republican nomination appears to have stabilized in recent weeks. Former Tennessee Senator Fred Thompson has enjoyed a consistent but very slight advantage over former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani in Rasmussen Reports polling. Former Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney and Arizona Senator John McCain have roughly half the support of the frontrunners as they battle for third place and nobody else has gained any traction.

But the stability is misleading and the race for the Republican Presidential nomination is wide open.

Currently, nearly half of Likely Republican Primary Voters either express a preference for an unannounced candidate (Thompson) or say that they are not sure how they will vote. All of those votes could be in play when Thompson formally enters the race and is forced to submit to the grind of debates, questions, and events being endured by the other candidates. If the man who walked away from the Senate is deemed to be acceptable, many of those undecided voters will probably push Thompson to an even bigger lead

Among all voters nationwide, Thompson has enjoyed growing support as his amazingly successful pre-campaign roll-out moves along. Twenty-five percent (25%) of all voters now say they will definitely vote for the man from Tennessee if he is on the ballot in 2008. No other Republican matches that level of base support. Among Democrats, only Clinton and Obama have higher levels of base support (and Clinton has the highest level of base opposition among all candidates).

28 percent base support for hill and bam. bam hill...hill bam...hillabama.

Given Fred has a fairly dead-even contest with hill currently, I’d say once he enters and debates...he has a good chance of slaying the beast.

“If the man who walked away from the Senate is deemed to be acceptable”

There sure are a lot of people who would like to take Fred down a notch. Too bad for them they don’t have much ammo.

I’m just fantasizing what Thompson’s number will do when he announces.

the man who walked away from the Senate

Ought to be his appellation. Sounds like a winner to me.

Fred is the winner of the early debates, merely by not participating.

Being a little facetious, but can you envision a scenario where Fred gets nominated, then feels guilty for beating the others, says HRC really deserves the office, and withdraws to support HRC so he can return to Law and Order. In other words: I don't think there is the fire in the belly with Fred like there is with HRC.

Not at all: I don’t think these candidates have what it takes to defeat HRC. They are too gentlemanly — like Lazio was in 2000.

All things considered, Fred’s numbers are amazing.

He didn’t just walk away, he believes in term limits. An admirable quality.
