'Keepin' it real' has helped damage Vick
MSNBC ^ | 8/2/2007 | Bryan Burwell

Before this is over -- in fact before it barely gets started -- there will be those out there more than willing to fan the flames of stupidity, trying to craft this into something it is not. There will be idiots out there who will attempt to diminish the severity of the crime, as if despicable acts of cruelty against dogs are merely some cultural and class-based misunderstanding.

This is not exactly what I would call a smart line of defense. I’ve heard from rednecks and country boys and inner-city underground cultists who swear dog fighting and cock fighting isn’t much different from ultimate fighting, and that anyone with a healthy blood lust would understand. That of course is preposterous. Animals have no free will. Humans do. If a man chooses to engage in a no-holds-barred caged brawl, that’s his business.

But animals have no such options in the fight business.

You can’t take part in, or watch, crap like that without damage to your inner core. I may be a redneck but I’m not a savage. I can kill when I must, but not just because I have nothing else to do.

This is a superb post.

“Keepin’ it real...”. What does this really mean(pun intended)?

Another excerpt:

I’ve written about this before, and so I want to be very precise with my words. For far too many modern black athletes, “keepin’ it real” has become the dangerous anthem that is threatening to destroy all the good that the previous generation of black athletes helped create.

“‘Keepin’ it real’ is one of the most dangerous phrases in our language,” St. Louis Rams Pro Bowl running back Steven Jackson says. “It puts us in situations we have no business being in, then makes it almost impossible to get out of.”

So the phrase means what? “To hell with everyone else, I’m gonna do what I want to do.” Is that it?

This writer is in sore need of an editor, although his point at the end is worthwhile — if you can persevere through the muddy middle of the article.

Nice reading. Also, it's Friday, payday, and I get to bash that sick POS Vick first thing this morning. What a great day so far. Say goodbye to your career, oh and by the way Mike...

The premise of this column is correct, but I call BS on this statement above. I don't believe for a second he went out and interviewed "country boys and inner-city underground cultists."

Puppies and kitties are involved, which means that most air-headed, middle-class, mall-shopping, suburban white women, (like Oprah according to rapper 50 Cent*, who also “keeps it real”) won’t be able to give “Bad Newz Kennels” Vick either the presumption of innocence or the benefit of their doubts.

(and “Ass-salaami Alai-cum” -”Peace be upon you”, RiBPA, from the densely forested northeastern corner of your state. Mostly rocks, rattlesnakes, and Republicans where I live, some say.)

So the phrase means what?

In my opinion, "Keeping it real" means emphasizing our animal needs and just going with whatever your emotions tell you to do. It's the opposite of being civilized. Civilization is an artificial construct which moves humans away from a purely savage existence. If you "keep it real", you embrace the savagery.

He could have heard them in to talk radio to make his point. I will give him the benefit of the doubt on this one, as he doesn’t even need that line to get the point across.

Excellent article IMO.

If the man is quilty of a felony offense (dog-fighting is a felony) then he should do the time as it relates to that offense.

I don’t agree with those who say he should get time off for good behaviour because they were pit-bulls. That is just wrong.

If it was up to me, it would be a dousing of water with a cord......

No punishment is too severe for this guy. And this was not a sport he was participating in, but a sociopathic behavior. I hate to hear the talking heads refer to it as sport. In a sport, you can score or be scored upon. In this however, there was only one possible outcome for those dogs.

No, no, no. Keepin' it Real means doing will give you street-cred, man. You gots to, otherwise your boyz will be thinkin' you ain't all that. You be soft. Above all, you must stand up to the man and anyone else that might be disrespectin' you. And it isn't just a black thing.

I’ve always thought “Keepin’ it real” applied to idiots that refused to disassociate themselves from past stupid actions and lowlife acquaintances. Make millions of dollars, yet still engage in lower class activities like dogfighting? Hey, just keepin’ it real. Still hang out with junior high friends from the ghetto who just happen to sell crack? Just keepin’ it real.
