T'wit, FReeper extraordinaire, has died.

A great FReeper and close friend passed. T’wit, also known as Timothy Wheeler passed on. In tribute, I would like to make this the August thread of Terri Dailies, the topic foremost in T’wit thoughts.

Tim was a man of great faith, a faith that grew stronger especially in recent months. As I type this, I still am not yet coherent, as I try to awaken and sip a good coffee brought to me recently by Tim. In his usual fashion, he probably figured I would appreciate a little care package and would appreciate the better quality than the usual fare we would fix.

But I do not want this thread to be maudlin, nor a reminiscing on anecdotes, rather a stab at what Tim would want.

T’wit was passionate about the beauty of nature, of good books, good music, and intellectual challenge, but mostly he was passionate about his love for our America, for Jim Robinson’s FreeRepublic, and for our fight for those in the plight of Terri Schiavo. For the latter, he sought justice and fervently hoped and prayed we on Terri’s List would carry on this battle against the evils of those who would control who lived and died.

In our many talks, he would sound like a poster boy for all the stated position of Jim Robinson.

His wife told me last evening the final thoughts he had. As can be expected, it was for us to continue our fight as we have done already. She hoped that rather than flowers or donations sent, that donations be directed at causes like that supporting Terri’s Legacy, the Terri Schindler Schiavo Foundation. In this way, we remember him and further his wishes. T’wit and I talked a lot about faith and I can reassure all, his faith in Our Lord was strong and growing stronger, a comfort to me that he carried it to the end.

My words come out with difficulty this morning, but should flow better later, although without the word play and banter we would sometimes engage, at least for now. T’wit would be upset if I quit the puns for long, though.

We will continue our prayers for T'wit and his wife and family.

A powerful tribute was delivered to T'wit a few days ago in Louisville KY at the meeting of the Philadelphia Society and with the Intercollegiate Studies Institute and the McConnell Center. The rather large body, perhaps the greatest gathering of true conservative and religious thinkers one would find anywhere, heard the impassioned words of Dr. Bill Campbell. He is past president (as was Ed Meese) and current Secretary of the organization and he honored Tim's amazingly steadfast beloved wife and widow by this tribute. She is a stalwart in her own right. As friends of Tim, we were honored as well at his table.

Consider this large gathering included household names in conservative circles, thinkers, writers, and most importantly, truly conservative leaders in our universities. And then, consider Dr. Campbell;s emphasis that his dear friend of many years, far more than a member, was a pillar of the organization from the start, and a seeding of sorely needed light humor, his trademark. If I may paraphrase with risk of a mistake or two, here is how he put it. "First there was Goldwater and then Reagan, but before them, there was Tim..."

Throughout the weekend we heard stories of all Tim added in his usual unsung way, with wit, and with behind-the-scenes shaping of books of others, works where he would scarcely expect credit.

Now another tribute shapes up. As many knew, Tim was a master at crossword puzzle writing and of similar word games. The November issue of "The Enigma" will recognize his passing and the December issue will include a memorial section for remembrance of Tim

No better example can I recall where I could take a presence for granted and find it missed so much each day when it is gone. But Tim remains with us as a muse and inspiration and a prodding that we not slacken off. He would be gently scolding and I would deserve every word.

Is “The Enigma” a publication that I can get at a Barnes & Noble or Borders? I’d like to see it.

I have asked T’wit to pray to God for various things, because I know he is so close to God.

Terri makes the New York Times. Of course the fail to mention that's she's deceased. They also mistakenly said she was on life support. Feeding tubes are NOT life support.

The Enigma is a publication of The National Puzzlers' League.

You can find out more at the site. It is out of my League. A few years back Mom would get me some puzzles, sort of, but I would not be that great at connecting the right dots or coloring inside the lines. Crayons in those days were just not as versatile as these days.

This bunch, though, engages in all sorts of word play and as we know, T'wit was master.

They are hoping to find any more memorabilia he may have left behind.

Tim made so many anonymous contributions to the writings of many great minds. Though his signature is often absent, his signature wit sometimes jumps out at you.
