Fred Thompson on the Move

With a re-vamped Web site, a new “Weekly Update” e-mail to supporters, and the announcement of top campaign hires, the still-unofficial presidential campaign of actor and former Tennessee Sen. Fred Thompson edges ever closer to officialdom this week.

As part of the flurry of activity, Thompson informed supporters he was taking the month of August to travel around the country and speak with voters. “It’s not quite two-a-days, but I think we’re building some real momentum. To keep that momentum, we’re shifting into higher gear,” Thompson wrote in his inaugural e-mail update, released Tuesday,

On Wednesday, the campaign announced that Bill Lacy, a former Reagan White House political aide, had joined as chairman of “Friends of Fred Thompson.” Lacey worked on the presidential campaigns of Reagan, President George H.W. Bush and former Senate Majority Leader Bob Dole, and also worked on Thompson’s 2004 Senate run.

“As I move toward a decision on whether to run for president, I am confident he will take our operations to the next level,” Thompson said in a statement.

The campaign also named Randy Enwright national political director of the “testing the waters” campaign. Enwright, a Florida native, has served as executive director for the state GOP in Florida and Iowa and served as political director of the Missouri Republican Party, in addition to work on campaigns for all three Bushs — presidents George H.W. Bush and George W. Bush, as well as Florida Gov. Jeb Bush.

Linda Rozett, a spokeswoman for Friends of Fred Thompson, wouldn’t give a date for an announcement, but many observers expect Thompson to make his run official in early September.

I like Fred but he needs to decide. What he is doing now is taking away from real conservative alternatives leaving nobody but Rudy. I can’t say who is going to win in ‘08, and neither can Rush Limbaugh or any other pundit. But I’ve got a bad feeling in the pit of my stomach if Rudy gets the republican nod. Right now, as much as I like Thompson, the only thing I can say conclusively is that is what he is bringing about.

That's a contradiction. There is a big difference between testing the waters and campaigning.

He just needs to go ahead and declare and stop piddling around. He has had plenty of time to “explore” and he has to see he is the odds on favorite. The day he officially throws his hat into the ring is the day all the rest of the GOP candidates will become irrelevant. But he needs to do it now.

Well, I’m not sure that waiting is such a disadvantage for Fred, other than annoying supporters like me, who want him to declare.

He hasn’t missed much..meaningless debates, etc.

It may have put a delay in his fundraising but that will accelerate quickly once he declares. Lots of people are holding money, waiting on that.

We are an impatient society, but I kind of admire Fred for not letting himself be stampeded into moving before he is ready.

Just a little while longer, the new season of Law and Order starts in a couple of weeks. The rerun ad contract will be over and equal time issues will be avoided...

It all depends on your expectations.. hell, even the most Conservative, Duncan Hunter, if put under the same microscope as Thompson, would be called a RINO by some.. at that, there was an article here a while back calling Hunter a RRINO (Reagan Republican in Name Only)-

Now, do I believe that, hell no.. but calling one of the few real conservatives (Thompson or Hunter) in the race a RINO pretty much sets the bar to the point, that the R is an extinct species and we might as well give up and move to another country and give it to Hilldog.

It sure seems that he's in charge, doesn't it? Everyone waiting. Can't really call Rudy the front-runner yet. Etc.

Parade, that Sunday insert that unfortunately comes with the New York Post, answered a question from a reader by saying it's a matter of all the actors in Law & Order losing their residuals once the reruns are forced to stop. A showbiz answer, if I ever heard one, but there could be a bit of truth to it, I don't really know.

Meanwhile, Constitution Day, September 17, seems the perfect time to announce. The weakly political are back from their summer beach reading, it's not 9/11 but is close to it, so it will still be in everyone's mind . . .

I would be happy to send funds to his campaign, but not until he announces.
