Howie Carr live ping. The latest on Howie’s contract situation...from Save WRKO.com

BY BRIAN MALONEY
In a last-ditch effort to smooth out differences ahead of a legal showdown over Howie Carr’s planned exit from WRKO, both sides held an off-site pow wow yesterday, SaveWRKO has exclusively learned.

We’re told Carr brought his people, while the Entercommies made a grand entrance with their most fashionable suits, including Regional Vice President Weezie Kramer, who blew in from the Windy City.

Based in Chicago (even though the company has no operations there), Kramer is known for “fact-finding missions” undertaken for the benefit of Entercom CEO David Field. This frees up Field for more time jetting off to exotic locales.

Though said to be quite chummy with Empress Kahn, Kramer must by now be aware that the company’s Boston operations have become an industry joke. Protecting Her Majesty may no longer be an easy feat.

Unfortunately, the battery wore out on our bugging device, so we’re not sure how this all worked out. Was the meeting designed to resolve outstanding legal issues so that Howie can leave on happy terms? Or has an eleventh-hour attempt been made to keep him at WRKO?

My money’s on the latter scenario. That said, does Howie really want to work in that miserable environment any longer than he has to?

“Howie, we’ll match your salary offer and try to find a way so you’re not pre-empted by the Sox any more. And to show our good faith, we’ll deliver a SECOND plate of fried clams and tar-tar
sauce to you every week.”...

Howie’s column in today’s Herald

You’re Willard Mitt Romney, and now that everyone knows you’re worth maybe as much as $250 million, you won’t hear the end of it for a week, maybe longer.

People are already asking, if Mitt’s worth a quarter of a billion, how come he couldn’t afford to put Seamus the Irish setter in a kennel instead of up on the roof of the station wagon in a crate for an 800-mile ride?

And how come he made his son Josh buy the Winnebago that he drove around Iowa “serving” his country in - Mitt couldn’t have just signed over the title?

Not that the boys are hurting, you understand. They have a $100 million trust fund to dip into for incidentals such as a used Winnebago.

John McCain has the Hanoi Hilton, Mitt has Marriott.

Two hundred fifty million and Mitt still couldn’t find an American lawn crew to cut his grass in Belmont?

All that do-re-mi, but Mitt still made his 2002 running mate, Muffy, kick in a million of Sean Healey’s hard-earned money for their blind-date campaign for the governorship?

At least now the radio talk show hosts in Des Moines will have something new to bludgeon him with besides Mormonism. Mitt is the one major Republican who’s only been married once, but now it turns out, he could afford three, four, even five wives.

You’re Mitt Romney, and at least you worked for your money.

Unlike, say, John Kerry, who made his money the old-fashioned way. He married it.

You’re Mitt Romney and you never took a $500,000 book advance plus $300,000 in expenses from Rupert Murdoch, unlike a certain ambulance chaser from North Carolina.

You’re Mitt Romney, Harvard Business, Harvard Law. You never had to pass out business cards on Monday mornings in the first session of the BMC that said, “Reasonable doubt at a reasonable price.”

The problem with new money is that the nouveau riche who made it haven’t had sufficient time to launder it. Mitt is just old enough - 60 - and certainly smart enough, to have scrubbed everything clean. Unlike 1994, no unemployed factory workers from Indiana will be showing up at Romney rallies next year, that’s for sure.

And look who’s managing his money - the law firm of Ropes & Gray. Nice touch, Mitt, using the firm that Gov. Deval Patrick’s wife, Diane, is a partner in.

You’re Mitt Romney, and people don’t understand that there’s a downside to big money. The old cliche is true: You just can’t get good help anymore.

Just ask Jay Garrity.

And by the way, what’s wrong with owning a piece of the Yankees? That’s a good Republican outfit. George Steinbrenner went down on a campaign contribution to Nixon way back when, and A-Rod was a big W supporter in 2004. The Texas Rangers connection and all that.

You know, $250 million ain’t what it used to be. It won’t get you on the Forbes 400, that’s for sure.

You want to talk real money, take a look at New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg, who was ripping Mitt in the tabloids yesterday for his anti-illegal alien platform.

But the lead of the story was not: Billionaire Michael Bloomberg chastised multimillionaire Mitt Romney.

You’re Mitt Romney, and you have the house in Belmont, you used to have a cottage on the Cape, which you unloaded and bought the place on Lake Winnipesaukee, and of course the ski condo in Park City, Utah.

How come no real estate in Florida, Mitt? In some sunny place for shady people, as they say.

You’re Mitt Romney, and you’ve already loaned your campaign $9 million, but it could be worse, much worse. You could not have $9 million to spend on your campaign.

Was this before or after his “jury duty”?

That “was” his jury duty. On Friday, Howie said “I’ll be off next Tue. for Jury Duty” but during his last hour on Mon.
he admitted, “I am going to be off tomorrow; it’s not really jury duty, it’s something else”. But I figure he meant “jury
duty” to mean “legal stuff”, and I guess that’s just what it was.

:)

So much for the pow-wow; Howie started off his show today by saying “Nothing has changed in the day that I was gone, let’s leave it for that,
for those of you who are curious.”

He has to deal with the Dennis and Callahan situation, too.
Boston Sports Media has speculated that the D&C lockout is
a “stunt” but John Dennis denies that it is. BSMW points out
that, like Patriots exec Scott Paoli, Wolfe is working “under
the constraints of a salary cap”.

So you have Entercom offering only a limited amount of money;
Howie had been paid $790k (salary leaked by someone at
Entercom) and they offered him $50k less than that...meanwhile
D&C are claiming they’re a big part of WEEI’s success and
want a salary similar to Howie’s if not more (supposedly
they’re asking for $1M to $1.5M a yr, EACH).

Oh, and Glenn Ordway’s contract is up NEXT year.

How much can WRKO afford in its effort to keep Howie?
Again, you heard the man say today at the start of
the show: “There have been no changes”

We still are awaiting any official word, though...again,
HC is due to have his WRKO/Entercom contract expire
on Sep 19 and WTKK wanted him to start there on Oct 1
but it’s anyone’s guess at this point what station
winds up with him.

Brian Maloney of SaveWRKO.com somehow feels that
HC will stay with WRKO—maybe that will happen IF
D&C jump elsewhere, and there will be a lot of money
free to give to Howie. That is, IF he wants to stay!

...after hitting an opposing team’s pitcher and catcher with his bat ...

That's relief. At least he left the sleeping seagulls alone. He won't have to worry about tasty Canadians or PETA. /sarcasm

Isn't that what Juan Marichal did to that SF catcher back in the 60s?

what was that guy's name? Oh Johnny Roseboro!

Well, they seem to think so. Pretty good ratings, “top rated”
some may say.

Sox lose 6-5 despite having tying and winning runs on base.
Manny strikes out to end it.
Meanwhile Yanks had tied Balt. 3-3 but I see now (Yahoo
game tracker) that Balt has taken a 6-3 lead in top 10th.
Hope O’s hold on to beat them. (Those listening to WVMT,
like Calvin Locke, might get Howie after 5 pm if they’re
lucky since WVMT carries Yanks)

yes—looks like first two batters in bottom 10th made outs
then A-rod got a single and went to 2nd on defensive
indifference...hope game ends soon; I imagine it’s a good
20-25 minutes of postgame stuff.

oops, make that a final! Matsui grounds out. Yankees lose,
theeeeeeeeeeeeeeee Yankees lose! Too bad Sox did too
