The San Francisco rookie police officer who accidentally shot himself to death fired his weapon while displaying for a female friend how officers are taught to avoid having their guns used against them, law enforcement authorities said Tuesday.

The incident happened at 1:40 a.m. Saturday during a gathering of as many as 15 people at the San Mateo apartment of the 23-year-old officer, James Gustafson Jr.

According to those familiar with the incident, Gustafson was showing his Police Department-issued semiautomatic pistol after removing the clip that stores the rounds. He explained that there are ways an officer can disable a weapon in close proximity to keep it from being fired.

It apparently was part of a demonstration of the department's "weapons retention" procedures. However, there was still a bullet in the chamber.

Gustafson pointed the weapon at his neck and pulled the trigger, shooting himself, according to authorities.

Funny you should say that about the ones who should know better being the biggest problem. There was an incident locally where a boy that competed in shooting sports fatally shot himself in what appeared to be a gun cleaning accident. Some thought it must have been a covered up suicide because this boy had been exposed to so many firearms safety lessons it couldn’t be a blatant accident. A lady that teaches hunter safety classes in the area said in her experience many people become so familiar with weapons they actually get so comfortable they do really basic dumb things, and are many times the most careless about safety.

I’m glad the idiot killed himself and not someone else.

This may be the same reason that DEA shot himself in the leg during a “gun safety” demonstration.
On semi-autos you have to remove the magazine, then cycle the action to clear the chamber.

If this is all you do you are a very dangerous operator.!!!

Don’t forget the visual inspection. No extractor is 100% infallible.
Isnt that the truth.

About 30 years ago, i removed the magazine, cycled the slide, pointed (lucky for me) at the discharge barral, and pulled the trigger.

BANG!!!

Now I look at the chamber, and stick my pinky into it if the light is less than very bright.

On pain of death of a loved one, do not trust the extractor to pick up the chambered round.

xxxxxxxxxxxx

Dead on -— never never trust a mechanical empty chamber check.

Paige, who writes that he was “once regarded as one of the best undercover agents, if not the best, in the DEA,” points to the clip’s recent airing on popular television shows and via the Internet as the reason he can no longer work undercover. He also notes that he is no longer “permitted or able to give educational motivational speeches and presentations.”

All I can say to Mr. Paige is actions have consequences, buddy, and you gotta live with yours...

How about the "gun is always to be considered loaded, never point your weapon at something you aren't willing to destroy, fire only when you can identify your target and what lies behind it...

TC's corollary to the "gun is always loaded", "The staple gun is always empty!"

I didn’t add the visual and tactile check of the chamber, too.

I was just pointing out the basic sequence of events (magazine first, then work the action).

ALWAYS ASSUME A GUN IS LOADED AT ALL TIMES.

NEVER POINT A GUN AT ANYTHING YOU ARE NOT PREPARED TO SHOOT.

You don’t need to be around guns 24/7 to know the basics of gun safety... you do however need parents who are going to teach them to you..

This fool was trained with these rules.

That is why those rules are unsafe.

There are only two reasons for Negligent Discharges:

either ignorance i.e. lack of proper training
or carelessness after receiving proper training.

If he was trained to point a real gun at himself
or someone else; this causes error.

When I train instructors or students in personal protection,
we never use a real gun.
we always use a Blue non-functioning training gun.

I hope this clarifies the point.
