GOP Holdouts On State Budget Cite Principle (Senate CAGOP Leads Red California Rebellion Alert)
Los Angeles Times ^ | 08/18/2007 | Michael Rothfield

When state Sen. Bob Margett walks among the manufacturers and dairy farmers of his conservative district, he says, "it's all attaboys" for his part in the seven-week budget stalemate that has paralyzed much of state government.

" 'Bob, . . . thank God for the Senate,' " the Arcadia lawmaker recalled hearing time and again. "I'm getting all these attaboys to hang in there, and that's my constituency. I don't have a single vote in San Francisco." ....

Nor is he beholden to voters in other largely Democratic urban areas. Margett and 13 GOP colleagues in the Senate represent a minority of Californians, mostly in rural towns, yet by banding together to withhold the one vote still needed, they have stretched the budget deadlock to 48 days.Even after the budget battle ends, it could have a lingering effect. Bill Whalen, a researcher at the Hoover Institution, a Republican-leaning think tank, said the fight could presage an effort by conservatives to move the state party farther to the right after the moderate Schwarzenegger leaves office.

Margett, who was home in Arcadia nearing the end of Leo Tolstoy's 800-page novel "Anna Karenina" as the stalemate wore on this week, said the governor's move to the middle had alienated the senators from him politically.

"He could, other than on fiscal issues, be a very good Democrat," Margett said. "It's not that we don't like the governor. He's a hell of a guy. He's great to have at a cocktail party."

CAGOP leads Red California Rebellion Bump - those who live in California's vast, thinly populated conservative rural counties.

If Republicans in the U.S. Congress had acted like this, on fiscal matters, when they had the majority, we might still hold at least one house of Congress.

Kudos to California legislature’s Republican Senators.

This story has revealed a few things: conservatives are NOT legitimate in liberal eyes and they live in places few liberals bother to go - the hayseed hick places of Flyover Country. And for the Left, affluence goes well with the expectations of urban life, while for the Right, the demands of rural existence call for self reliance and economy of outlook. This brings us to the MSM's bias: the overwhelming majority of journalists are urban liberals who view a rural conservative as a sort of exotic species at best and most of the time as a pest who gets in the way of the liberal agenda. That's the background to California's lengthy budget stalemate and the media reporting on it.

Precisely. Liberals see the rest of the world as something to be studied under a microscope.

Talk about an endangered species...conservative Republicans in CA! If we had had men like these in D.C. the past eight years, they’d still be in the majority in Congress.
By the way, a big “I told you so” from FReepers who said Ahhnold would turn out to be a flop as Governator.

More evidence the Times never gets anything right:

That's Dennis Hollingsworth, not Dave Cogdill.

I think the CA GOP has turned the corner here. McClintock is receiving praise from a lot of swing and independent voters in CA. People are waking up and realizing the truth.

That’s really good to hear.

I remain convinced that we lost Congress in 2006 more due to spending like drunken sailors, and too many ethics violations by Congressmen, much more so than because of the war in Iraq. Of course, the moonbat Left sees the 2006 Congressional elections almost purely as a referendum on Iraq.

The scary part is that there is only a single vote separating the common decency of fiscal sanity and the swirling toilet of socialist tyranny.
