Couldn't Believe My Eyes (Local Wal-Mart turned blind eye to in-store indecent exposure)
8-25-2007 | RightFighter

Posted on 08/24/2007 10:17:50 PM PDT by RightFighter

I was walking through Wal-Mart this evening with my 9-year old son picking up some groceries. When we were all done, we went to the magazine section just prior to checking out. While I was standing there, I saw a young man of about 25-30 years old walking toward the register next to the magazines. Something struck me as odd, and I finally realized that it was his pants - they were down around his mid-thigh, so that his boxer shorts were fully exposed.

The next thing I noticed, and I will forever rue the day that I saw this, was that his boxer shorts were wide open in the front. I'll leave the rest up to your imaginations, since, sadly, it was a reality for me.

I am not normally the type to complain about things, but I felt this was necessary, so I went to the Customer Service counter and told the girl about what I saw. She looked at me with wide eyes, and promptly did NOTHING.

I then went out the door, and I stopped and told the greeter at the door that there was this situation and that I'd told the customer service girl and she had done nothing. The greeter told me that it was probably because Wal-Mart's policy doesn't allow employees to say anything to a customer that the customer might deem offensive. I said, "But this man is exposing himself in your store. That is against the law. It's not a matter of insulting him - you should be having him arrested."

I got the wide-eyed look again and more of the inaction the customer service girl gave me.

Then, in the parking lot, I saw a police officer. I tried to flag her down, but she drove right by me.

The question is, what more should I / could I have done?

Bonus Question: What fact is this narrative leaving out that you are just begging for?

If I could access a phone, I’d have called the police. But shock and frustration can make us all lose our train of thought :)

Was it one of our famous immigrants doing the job Americans won’t touch with a pole?

LOL! But anyone doing that in a store right in public might go all insane on your a**!

Don’t tell Wal-Mart workers; ask for a manager. Most of your Wal-Mart workers won’t care. They have a “I’m not paid to care” kind of attitude. A lot of Wal-Mart policy changes have been affecting their attitudes, but it’s also just who they hire.

Ask for a manager (tell them it’s urgent) and tell them what happened. The security cameras will have captured the entire thing (wouldn’t be surprised if Loss Prevention was watching, though they usually can’t leave their post) and you could contact the authorities later. Also, you might have called the police on a cell phone. That is (should be!) something that is taken very, very seriously.

I think you should go further and talk to managers tomorrow. Explain what happened (up to you whether or not you want to tell the managers who ignored your complaint — it could mean a reprimand or even a firing for the people involved) and explain that, as a customer, you certainly won’t be shopping in a place where indecent exposure (especially to minors) is ignored.

In hindsight (har!) you might also have made a fuss by loudly demanding the man put things back where he found them. That would have made a scene and drawn attention to it (the scene), which would DEFINITELY get someone in authority to come check it out.

I’d be tempted to point, laugh and make a comment that included the word ‘small’. But I’d be more likely to duck around the corner, grab my cell, and call 911.

Gross! I wouldn’t want him to put anything back, only heaven knows what someone might catch!

I would definitely go back and emphatically complain to someone higher up the chain, tell them they won’t get my money if this is what they allow (including the neglectful attitude of the workers there), and explain to them that the first time one of these perverts even looked at my child in their store, they’d be getting the pants sued off of them. I wouldn’t sue, but they don’t need to know that!

Oh come on. This is the latest fashion trend for certain segments of the population. He just took it to the next level.

Look on the bright side. Maybe he was wizzing on Chinese products. It was a Wal-Mart, after all.

(Yeah, this is a sick story. If I started on an outrage rant, though, I'd get too worked up.)

May I also add, wal mart employees at least lower tier, are encouraged NOT to engage folks doing offensive behavior but instead to send for a manager, due to legal implications.

...you were what the perv was looking for...someone to shock...you were, he got his jollies. Most likely you’ll see him again in the store...THIS TIME....fine a manager....insist the security camera’s watch him specifically....(which they can and should do)...then make sure they call the cops when he starts playing “hide Mr Winkie” for lady customers.

Read up on it. You have the right to make a citizen’s arrest. If the kid doesn’t comply, you can probably put him on the ground and hold him until K-Mart officials go crazy trying to figure out which customer should not be offended most...

Eventually the cops will arrive and this pervert WILL be booked for indecent exposure. It’s a very serious crime. The kid will have to register as a sex-offender. That’s something nobody wants on their record. It will follow him the rest of his life, unless this too can get exponged when he’s 21.

I doubt it can, but I’m not sure.

I’m serious about reading up on this, or perhaps talking to an officer in your town. Tell him what happened and what someone suggested. See if he agrees or can give you a better suggestion. Perhaps he’ll just fill you in on exactly what procedure to follow if you do go the Citizen’s arrest route.

Good luck.

I know this is a fashion trend - but I’d never seen it to this extreme.

I felt like asking him if his mother knows he dresses like that, but I wasn’t sure that he wouldn’t go all gangster on me and pop a cap in my a$$.

While I did NOT get the exposure, this evening I did get to observe far more of a young man’s underwear than I wanted to observe. He got up out of a booth after having his gal rotate on his lap as though they were lap dancing and he proceeds to pull down his jeans and pull and tug out his drawers.

I asked my 19 year old daughter what was the deal with these males and their need to dress with their drawers on display and she says I don’t know my boyfriend wears a belt.

My brother, who was a police officer in Asheville, NC for 14 years, said that in NC, they won’t even treat it as a crime unless a female files a formal complaint about it and that even then, it would be treated as a misdemeanor.

I’d make good and sure you know the exact procedure on a citizen’s arrest before attempting one. I think it would be better just to call boatloads of attention to the guy. You’re getting more witnesses, more complaints, etc.

They are indeed supposed to, but sometimes they can take a bit to get down there from their location in the store. Otherwise if they even failed to do that they are in dereliction of their duties, apathetic imo.

Wow. If the guy is doing this now, what’s he going to be doing for kicks in ten to fifteen? That’s a pi— poor policy IMO.

Thanks.

Remember how New York cut crime. They treated all small crimes as important. Sure enough, the big crime rate fell because of it. It would sure be a shame if this kid had to do something purely evil to some small kid or a woman to bring the hammer down.

Thanks Dave. You may be right. We sure live in an intersting age. People can do anything today because so many people have been brainwashed into thinking that whatever others do, it’s normal, even if they don’t do it themselves.

Nah, some things are just evil.

And isn’t that the worst of it? Besides the kid being involved it’s just plain demoralizing to know that a place like that couldn’t care less.

You should call the management and ask them what the hell, tomorrow. Better yet, cut the middle man and call corporate. Course you’re only going to get demoralized to the max with their response, no doubt.

You take care.

BTW, I wonder if they import the sausage from China. Every thing else seems to be... including the attitude.

A couple of years back I was in a SAMS and I saw a guy in a t-shirt with the word F*CK written in 8 inch letters across the front. There were other moms and kids all over the store. I was so flabbergasted I walked up to the guy and asked what on earth was going on in his head. He started mumbling and walked away.

His buddy came up and claimed to be a Viet Nam era veteran Marine. He said he had gone to war so this guy could have the freedom to wear that shirt. I told him my dad was a Marine drill instructor who did two full tours in Viet Nam and he would have kicked both of their hind quarters if was alive to see this kind of filthy disrespect.

Then I walked over to customer service to find a manager (who was unavailable). I told the people at the desk what I had seen and asked how they could let something like that into their store. I basically got the same answer you got -- a shrug. Although they could not believe someone was actually wearing that t-shirt -- until they saw him leave a few minutes later.

I really don't know what people are thinking today. It's as though they all have some mental condition that causes them to lose all restraint. Then they fully believe they have the "right" to do anything they can think of doing and no one, not even those in authority seems to have the good sense to stop them.

As pathetic as this guy was I had to deal with, I think I would have had to call the police if I had seen the guy you saw. (They would have had to take one of us away.)

There was a guy years back attending UC Berkeley, going to class totally NAKED. He was known as the naked guy. The campus did nothing. After a while he started showing up in shopping malls totally naked. My girlfriend at the time was the manager at one of the malls and had to ask him to leave. A few years later naked guy committed suicide. True story.

I was heading out of our neighborhood one day, only to see a bum with some sort of alcohol laying back, pull out his you know what, and start peeing up in the air. I turned the car around and told my husband, who was still at the house, to call the police—their non emergency number of course. The person on the other end acted like my husband was silly for calling. He asked my husband, “What did he do, pee on her car?”
