Nicolas Sarkozy made headlines this week by telling his diplomatic corps that "an Iran with nuclear weapons is for me unacceptable." But the French President did more in his speech than name the gravest current threat to global security, itself a feat of clear thinking. He also signaled that France means to be something more on the international scene than an anti-American nuisance player.
That's worth applauding at a time when the conventional wisdom says the next U.S. President will have to burnish America's supposedly tarnished reputation by making various policy amends. In Germany, under the conservative leadership of Angela Merkel, foreign policy views have been moving closer to the Bush Administration's, not further away, while new British Prime Minister Gordon Brown has made clear he will not depart significantly from the pro-American course set by Tony Blair.

Nicolas Sarkozy has accomplished a great deal in his first 100 days in office.
He has shown himself to be a very different kind of French President, light years ahead of his predecessor, Jacques Iraq.

Cincinna, did you see Segolene Royal on TV last week at the French socialist party convention? It seemed to me like she was trying to make nice, or did I misinterpret?

Do you not realize that it is an absolute fact -- continually repeated in education circles and lib circles generally -- that quality education ~requires~ a diverse mix of students?
Do you realize how deprived our public school youngsters would be if they were confined to a classroom with row on row of well-scrubed, eager students, respectful of their teachers and interested in learning, competing with and reinforcing each other? What learning could go on without baggy jeans falling off, gangsta attitudes, diversity in spelling and, especially, the rich poetry of the hood which does not conjugate verbs and calls all women...well, you know.
So what ya be sayinin' here homey...you some kinda fool or sompin'?

Like you, I've been holding on to the assertions that once Chiraq wasn't protected by being the President, he'd have to face corruption charges from his time as Mayor of Paris. It now looks like the French old boy network will protect him.
